Poor customer service, sub-standard living ...ahh, what a place!!!

Years at this apartment: 2001 - 2003
First of all, let me say the only reason why I am writing a negative review is so that another person like myself will NOT get trapped into living at Oakwood for what you think is the RIGHT decision.
I lived at Oakwood for a year and a half. I am a professional, college educated person, never loitered, paid rent on time every month (charged a late fee one month because the office processed the check late), used maintenance ONLY when I couldn't fix the problem myself...basically, an overall great tenant to have anywhere!
This place attracted me because of the location and the price (1 bedroom was 575 and 2 bedroom was 650). I lived in the 1 bedroom for about 6 months and then moved to a 2 bedroom. The 1 bedroom experience was great. The outside hall carpeting was dated, old and not-so-clean with a smell, but INSIDE my apartment was fine. To top it off the maintenance/leasing person I had to deal with was good. His name was, Morris.
ALL HELL BROKE LOSE WHEN I MOVED TO THE 2 BEDROOM, however!!! By this time the leasing person was someone different and her husband was the maintenance guy. When I moved into the 2 bedroom I was shocked to see that the apartment was not in as good of condition as my 1 bedroom. They pretty much did NOT get it ready and in the right condition for a move-in.
First, the bathroom...there was hair in the cabinets, tiles missing and thick mold all in the shower. The living room had a huge stain on the carpet. The carpet was worn, dirty and old (my 1 bedroom had a new one). When I complained about the carpet I was told that it wasn't "dirty enough" to have it replaced!! That just blew me away! Next, the blinds were seriously dusty and dirty. THe kitchen wall near the stove still had food on it from the previous tenant (even though the leasing woman SWORE that she was "standing there" when the apartment was being freshly painted). I complained on day 1 and followed all written procedures to get things fixed. However, most of the things were never fixed during the entire year I was there. It was as if they said "we're offering sub-standard housing and that's that"!
When I finally moved the experience got worse!
Let's just say I mentioned to them the problems that already existed in the place WHEN I moved in (did this over a month before moving out) and they told me to simply write a letter noting the conditions SO THAT I would not suffer any deductions from my Security Deposit. This was a disaster and DID NOT HAPPEN!!!
To date, WOODWARD PROPERTIES (owners of Oakwood Apartments, Stonehurst Apartments and many others) refuse to return over $350 back to me for things in the apartment they decided to WRONGLY charge me for ...even though I did not cause them!
Writing a letter was a waste (should've taken pictures) and when I spoke to the landlord/owner, KATHY WOODWARD herself, she was completely rude to me and even called me a "piece of trash". I gave her business and was a good tenant and so to hear this made me furious. I wish I did not live states away during that call because I would have immediately went to the office and showed her how trashy I could be!!
Anyway, this apartment community is not recommended for anyone who values customer service and wants to put their money to good use on a place that is WORTH it!

Oh, as for my view on the entire place...there's a good amount of blue collar working families and foreigners that live there. I didn't see too many seniors, but there are some fixed-income seniors there as well. Parking is ok...depends on what side you live on. Bottomline you'll never have to park outside the apartment community (on the street, for example). There's a new maintenance guy who came on board before I left who seems to be on point with getting the job done.
FINALLY, I would only recommend for someone to live here if you SERIOUSLY could not afford to live anywhere else. If you decide to live here though, bring a camera to take pictures of any damages or flaws you did not cause AND protect yourself and your rights as a tenant to the fullest degree with this place!!! Keep track of dates, calls, etc. Wish I had done the same...
