Lease Warning

Years at this apartment: 2003 - 2004
I used to live here for a little over a year. I completed the first year lease with no incident. In general, I really liked living there. Bill, the maintenence guy is *great*. But, then I was offered a job which required that I move. I had just been given a new lease to sign for the second year, which I had signed before knowing about this job. When I gave *2-month's* notice, they threatened to enforce the full lease. Little did I know at the time that the original lease had an automatic renewal clause. I didn't have to sign a thing for the lease to continue. And, under the automatic renewal, all I had to do was give 30-days' notice before vacating. But, because they had me sign a *new* lease for the second year, it legally obligated me to the full year of payments, regardless. So, BEWARE of the signing another lease. You don't have to and *DON'T* if you think you may need to move within the next year. Luckily, they didn't pursue litigation, although they threatened to up until the day I moved out. Maybe they couldn't find me or maybe they felt I might "educate" the tenants about their lease practices. Nonetheless...lesson learned.
I would recommend living here, but understand your rights or you might be taken advantage of.
