Good points and bad

Years at this apartment: 2003 - 2006
I currently live here. I'm on the 3rd floor and face the parking lot and York Road. That is a baaaad combination noise-wise. People tend to be very rude in the parking lot - honking horns, carrying on loud conversations, blaring car radios, or having cars with loud mufflers (which is an oxymoron - what's with the purposely loud mufflers these days'!).
As if that wasn't bad enough, the hallway noise is the worst I've ever experienced in an apartment. My rude neighbors tend to slam their doors shut and it's as if they live with me. If they came home one time every night, I could tolerate it. But apparently I live in the Grand Central Station building where tenants and their guests are in and out all day and night. Each time their doors slam it makes my blood boil. I've tried posting notes to ask everyone to be considerate and close front doors quietly - some have heeded, some have not. If Westbury would put steel doors on the units (rather than the wood ones that don't even line up to the frames), this problem would be greatly reduced.
Then there's the smoking. My lovely neighbors smoke. A LOT. The hallway constantly smells like smoke and, thus, my apartment does as well. Again, a decent front door may resolve that problem (block the smoke from getting into my unit at least). And if it's not smoke coming from another unit inside, it's smoke drifting up from someone puffing away outside under my windows. This becomes a real problem in the summer when the windows are open and I have fans blowing air in. And what do they do with their cigarette butts' Toss them in the sparse grassy area - the only area my young son has to play in. Heaven forbid they'd use an ashtray. Appalling.
On the plus side, the apartments are very big with more than ample storage space. And it's affordable. And maintenance is pretty good. I think it's a perfect fit for younger people (which is what the landlord seems to be renting more and more to and, thus, the rude/inconsiderate behaviors). I'm 40 and have a child so it's not the ideal place for us. If only the landlord could designate some buildings as "mature, older, non-smokers"...
If I were lucky enough to face a quiet area (not the parking lot), I'd be perfectly content for now - even with the hallway noise (maybe not so much with the smoking). As it is, I'm currently looking for another place to live.
