I moved to Charleston from the north and needed a place to stay. West Ashley is convenient, and there are A LOT of apartment options out there. I chose Ashley Crossing for their newer-looking apartments that were very close to I-526. However, it is such a pain leaving for work in the morning, as the road right next to the apartments is always filled with traffic. I'm talking 10 minutes to go less than a mile. Monday-Friday 7:30 - 8:30 AM, it doesn't matter. To make it worse, 1/4 of the apartments are right next to this noisy road, and it is noisy every day, every night. I do NOT recommend staying at one of the apartments that border or even come a stones throw from Magwood Drive. Also on this road, people walk to & from a mexican restaurant. These people are always dressed poorly and 90% of the time speaking a different language. I can see them from my balcony every night! Somewhat creepy and unsafe in my opinion.
I am moving to a different place in June, 2008; a 2BR, 2BA townhouse I found for rent ($800/month!) which is on James Island - much closer to the beach & downtown. I can't wait to get out of here and move to my new, nicer, less expensive townhouse! If you're thinking of moving here, first check the local papers or craigslist.com - you will be happy you did.

I agree with the reviewers above. The noise issue is a BIG problem. You would think the apartments along Magwood would be cheaper. The noise NEVER stops. There are many night that I'm awaken by back fire from trucks. Police/Ambulance/Fire Truck sirens. Motorcycles. And let's not forget the "booming" music that drives by. I HATE it. We have lived here for almost two years. The recent staff changed definately has me concerned about future change. However, the new staff have been speedy about fixing problems whereas the past staff always took their time. Overall though, this apartment isn't the worst out there!

The noise from the road is not the only issue. We live in the back and hear, in addition to the road noise, all noise coming from the back of the Food Lion. They empty the trash containers at 4:00 in the morning a few times a week and clean the parking lot ALL NIGHT LONG once a week. We hear EVERY noise made by the people above us, including as absurd as it sounds, bathroom noises. We hear every step they take and every single move. There is no insulation between floors. WE HAVEN'T HAD A FULL NIGHTS SLEEP SINCE WE MOVED HERE. Something that should be considered before moving here. Also, yesterday we received a notice that an outside company will be taking a random survey of the tenants. HMMMM....wonder if thats because of their HUGE number of vacancies since ownership/office staff changes. OWNERS OF ASHLEY CROSSING APARTMENTS....GET A CLUE. THE PEOPLE RUNNING THIS PLACE CERTAINLY DON'T HAVE ONE.

Traffic? Turn right, drive one block and make a left "U" turn at the old folks home. Works every time. I've never owned a car that didn't need gasoline, I've never had a pet who didn't need a vet, and I've never lived in an apartment that didn't have a noise problem to some degree or another. The way I see it you have three choices: 1) buy a house, 2) move up in cost to a noise level you feel is appropriate, or 3) get a white noise machine. If noise is a problem for you, then maybe you're looking in the wrong places and need to base you living quarters on decibels and not dollars. After living aboard an aircraft carrier for a number of years I can safely say that most who complain about noise have no real reference point. Disagree? Oh well.... Doug Glass, Aiken, SC

I do disagree!! Traffic and normal living noises are expected and completely acceptable. Defend Ashley Crossing Apartment faults all you want, however when you're awake most of the night listening to the people above you having sex and taking a pee, then there's a problem with construction. We've lived in several apartments and are absolutely not overly sensitive to noise but this place is ridiculous. There is no insulation between floors. Another little problem.....they rent to whatever trash comes along. I've sat on my patio and had maggots falling on me from the deck above. Instead of disposing of their garbage in the appropriate containers in the parking lot, the neighbors above kept theirs on the deck. They also let their dog out on the deck to go to the bathroom instead of taking it outside. We cleaned dog urine off our outdoor furniture and patio on a daily basis. Management wouldn't let us out of our lease without paying a huge fee and it took them 6 months to correct the problem. If living conditions like this are acceptable to you then you must be some of the trash I speak of. Real high class place this is for almost $1,000 a month! We have purchased a house and will be moving very soon.

I have lived at Ashley Crossing since 2006. It is miserable. As a person who has lived at 4 different apartment complexes in different cities, this is by far the most expensive and worst I have chosen. The people below me smoke and I smell cigarette smoke constantly. It fills up my dryer as well so if I do not remove my clothes immediately, I am forced to rewash them. I also have to odo-ban my dryer and run it for 10 minutes before I can use it. I complained to maintenance and their solution was to run the dryer for 10 minutes before use. Glad my power bill gets to be increased and everything is inconvenient for me because my neighbor smokes and the apartment exhaust is combined between our untis.
I understand if you truly want silence you should buy a house. However, I am only here for 3 years so this was not the best option for me. The noise is very extreme here. I hear my upstairs neighbor's every footstep and he works odd shifts so I get woken up at 2:00 AM until about 4:00 every night. I can also tell you he is tone deaf since I hear him singing in the shower. The insulation here is pathetic! They need to cut the cost of living here since there are so many issues they can't resolve. I feel stupid paying $1000 to basically live in a paper thin cardboard box.
The sudden complete change in staff confused me and seemed shady but I hope it is for the best. Let's hope they are smarter than they seem on first impression.

WOW! Today I am very excited to be writing my 60 day notice letter to hand in with my April rent payment. However, I can't remember the last name of the property manager, Randy. So I tried to google Ashley Crossing. I was so excited to find these posts as they have validated everything I've been experiencing in the last year. I have not been happy with the staff change. And for the past 2 years my rent has gone up $100! The first two years it only went up about $30 - what a difference! And all because we got some fancier signage? Please. The new staff are all rather rude and imperious and let me tell you, serving breakfast on a random Thursday morning at the gate or a putting a goodie bag of juicy fruit on my front door knob is in no way going to help the situation. How about a friendlier, more competent maintenance staff? And the noise? Don't even get me started on all the incredibly inconsiderate neighbors I've dealt with the past few years. I'm purchasing a home so I'm moving a month early and just eating the rent for that month, it's well worth it to be out of there!

Yes I have lived here at Ashley Crossing for about a year in one of the nicest apartments they have to offer. With that being said however, I still have numerous complaints and can only imagine the difficulty these previous raters have experienced. The new staff often comes off as snooty, without any intelligence to back it up. It is disappointing to pay such a high amount in rent each month and feel like you are being taken advantage of. I don't recommend this apartment complex at this time, but if they get their act together it could be a nice place to live one day.

We lived at Ashley Crossing for 2 years. One of the previous posts regarding noise and neighbors above us was mine. I'm soooo glad we're out of there and in our own home now. The previous office staff was much better than the people they have in there now. As for Randy, the manager.....ha! Just try to get in touch with her about ANYTHING. You're pushed off onto Meghan who is about the rudest little ----- I've ever had to deal with. Randy is always on a conference call or too busy to talk with you. Good luck all you people with such low standards that you're enjoying living there. Keep paying that high rent!!

The complaints about "sound integrity" of the apartments is true. You shouldn't be able to hear people walking around, going potty in the bathroom, being intimate, or talking. The apartments are made of wood so that in itself is the problem. Magwood street is very noisy, very busy. Day or night. Doesn't matter. Traffic? Doesn't matter where you live. Charleston is notorious for heavy traffic. Mornings, midday, evenings, doesn't matter. Sometimes it takes me 5 to 10 mins. just to exit my apartment complex onto the main drag. I'm leaving soon!
