I lived at Columbiana Lakes from 1999-2005. I see that there are a lot of people posting negatives and some posting positives. For clarification, I think that the Lakes was a positive place for quite some time, but had a period of two years that were hard on residents. Intermark, the previous owner, started letting it go because they were trying to sell it. Only the entrance was kept neatly. Intermark started really cutting back and doing things that were questionable. Complaints about the management started when Todd became the manager. He was eventually fired by Intermark. When the property sold to Carter Haston, he was hired by them. This is why some people claim he was fired and others said he wasn't. As for much of the other stuff. Yes, DHEC closed the pool on July 4. It was actually closed quite often. There were two cases of meningitis that I know of. I think that is why it was closed down. The jacuzzi was green/black. Maintenance was slack, not by the maintenance personnel, but because management did not want to fix the problems in an effort to keep costs down before selling. The residents were definitely treated bad during this time. During a community meeting, we were told by Todd, the manager, that we were no longer be able to bring friends to the pool. This was in violation of our lease, but he claimed that too many residents were bringing friends and over crowding the pool, so NO MORE GUESTS PERIOD. As he rumbled this out of his mouth, I looked over his shoulder at the pool... Guess who was there' His entire youth group from his church... none were residents and there were about 50. When questioned, he simply stated that this was a perk of his job as manager and we had no right to question him. The 20 residents at the meeting were outraged. Yes, Todd started the first bonfire that he complained about. I was there, by invitation through a flyer from the management. I knew that the residents had started others in the same place, but yes, the management had actually built the rock enclosed pit for us. Although, I was not a part of the group that he complains about, I did think it was wrong for him to call the police. We all thought that he had built the pit for continued use because he didn't remove it. I never noticed anything but people playing guitar and laughing/enjoying thier life at their home. Management definitely targeted certain people. I heard him brag about it. He openly cussed certain people. I did think he was very rude even though I didn't have the run ins that others have posted they had. During this time, the asst manager's boyfriend was arrested and jailed for selling drugs. Yes, we were all notified that children could no longer play in the designated areas. This didn't affect me, but this is also true. Actually, the negative posts I read here are very true, unfortunately. On the bright side.... That was a long time ago and the manager was fired within a couple of days for his posts in this forum. The property is wonderful... when properly kept by competent management. If the staff is a good one then this place really is wonderful.
