Years at this apartment: 2004 - 2007
I lived in Cornell Arms for three years and each year it got progressively worse, until now I'm moving into a much better place. Here's the lowdown. First, rent is supposed to include cable, but none of the channels work. Second, Internet is ungodly expensive at $80 a month, and they are just now getting Road Runner put in--which somehow justifies a rent increase of $40 a month. Of course, I have doubts that they'll ever get that Road Runner working the way it should. None of the apartments have dishwashers or garbage disposals. The property manager refuses to make any renovations because it's supposedly an historic residence. My mailbox doesn't work. Anyone can open it by just pulling hard. So my mail isn't safe. The laundry machines break down just about every other month, and I'm not exagerating. What else' The property manager herself is extremely negligent and rhude. I'd once started to reserve an efficiency, planning to move out of my two-bedroom there, and had been told this was possible. But when I came by as instructed she denied our communication and said nothing was available. The apartment is loud. My upstairs neighbor watches TV throughout the night so that I had to buy earplugs and sometimes they don't work. At one point I could hear nextdoor neighbor's baby wailing throughout the night as well. People try to smoke in the elevators, which don't even stop on the floor you tell it to sometimes. The hallways stink of cigarette smoke, marijuana, and pet urine. Their pest control is lousy, as well. I worked on summer out of town and came back to find the place totally infested. Roaches all over the place, in my bed, bathroom. I couldn't live there and the property manager, again, did not consider a genuine fumigation an option. I spent more than $100 out of pocket on roach bait, home-defense spray, and black&decker sound devices. Since I stopped relying on the buildings half-assed pest control I haven't had a pest since. And, to top things off, the management overcharged me on rent for 6 months and forced me to dig up my contract to prove it to them. Even then I don't think they made full compensation. Oh, and I have a perpetual leak in my wall so that every fall maintenance has to bust a huge whole into my living room to "fix" the pipes and redo the plaster and painting, which takes them weeks. The ONLY reason I stuck with Cornell Arms was the location and parking. But they're selling off half of their parking lot anyway, so odds are you won't get a space nowadays. Finally, the heating of awful and so is the insulation. My roommate freezes to death in the winters because his bedroom window faces the wind. Heat leaks right through the place, so I have to keep an electric unit going just about all the time Dec-Feb.
