Stay away if you can afford it. Although, I must admit I have lived here way longer than planned but definetly not by choice. The staff are complete morons. Laura and Sylvia have to be two of the dumbest people alive. They never get anything done on time. I once had to sweat through half a summer before they fixed my window air conditioner. It smells. The tenents are mostly students or the odd balls of society. They advertise themselves as a historic building bearing quaint charm. Translation: They are too cheap to replace anything! The original "fixtures" include peeling lead paint, asbestos linoleaum, dingy crack house style apartments with little to no insulation. Don't get off on the fifth floor. You could get a contact high while waiting for the elevator again. If you are on a fixed income, suffer from a debilitating addiction, are mentally unstable, or a really struggling student then this is the place for you. Other wise dig into your pockets and plop down a few extra bucks for something decent. Luckily I finally finished my master's degree and can get the hell out of this place. Hasta la vista Sylvia!

Historic buildings are not for everyone. For example, if this is the first place you have lived since your parents kicked you out of the basement for being a moocher, then you might not like it. If, however, like some of us tenants (who are highly educated and not "screwballs")you have actually traveled and lived in real cities then you might appreciate the unique and quaint nature of the Cornell Arms. If one's experience of the world is limited to a suburb in Butt Flossing, MS (hey anonymous) then one might feel the need to write a childlike review of the place. As to the staff - lovely people all of them. Don't let this anonymous moma's boy (or girl) put you off the place. Like all things in life, look for yourself and make up your own mind, after all; it doesn't cost a thing to look.

"For example, if this is the first place you have lived since your parents kicked you out of the basement for being a moocher, then you might not like it." Wouldn't the opposite be true? Cornell Arms was my first apartment experience. At the time, I thought it was a --------, but I was dumb to what apartments should be like as I was out on my own, so as long as I could come and go as I pleased, everything was cool. I ignored the urine/cigarette/old food smell, the craptastic staff (doorman ended up gunning down a guy outside the building's front door during my last month of residence there), and the terrible parking situation (I must have spent a fortune on parking tickets) as the apartment was within a nice walking distance to my classes. But as the years have gone by, I've lived in much, much better places for the same price or lower (places that are cleaner, staff that is more reliable, etc.). Utilities paid is supposedly a lure, but electricity/water doesn't end up breaking renters, it's cable/internet/etc., and Cornell Arms does provide standard cable, but some channels are usually jacked up, fuzzy, etc. You have to pay for your own internet and phone... or at least we used to. But, like wolfran said, if your idea of a nice place to stay involves overpaying for dirty, dumpy conditions, go stay at Cornell Arms. But if you'd rather spend your hard-earned money on places that actually look like someone has given a damn about it since 1982, seek another apartment building. Also, for students that intend on having any friends over, Cornell Arms is a pain in the ass. You have to go down and get them everytime as Cornell Arms has a (more or less) security guard that is willing to kill in order to protect Cornell Arms. Actually, that one's behind bars, but he's up for release in a decade or so, so no long term leases should be signed.
