Ok, there are already a lot of negative reviews on here. I'll try to share a more balanced view.

First, a note on the water thing. Yes, it was a pretty horrible week. The elevators were out for two days and the hot water was out for a week. And we didn't get our rent reduced at all. I feel bad for the people who had their apartments flooded and lives totally disrupted. Hell, I feel bad for me for having to take 6 cold showers. But it wasn't management's fault; it was the plumbers who messed up. Management handled it with the competence of a bunch of pitiful loons. They really failed to communicate with the residents. In general, the response was poor. So that's out of the way. I don't expect something that catastrophic to happen again.

Parking: this is not a strong point. They mysteriously lost roughly half of their parking about a year ago. This led to a big squeeze on the parking situation. You might have to wait a while to get a space. Also, it's $45 extra a month to keep a space.

Noise: the walls are pretty thin, but I haven't had any noise problems in two years. My old next-door neighbors used to smoke a lot of pot and play bongos at odd hours, but other than that...most people here are old or grad students. Don't expect to lose much sleep.

Grounds: You know, whatever. There's not much of a pro or a con. I think there's a swimming pool on the top of the building but we can't go up there anymore. Other than that, there's really nothing extra here. Just apartments. It's relatively clean, except the restaurant downstairs constantly pours their mop water down a drain right outside the backdoor. It's not that bad.

Safety: Obviously, you already know a dude got shot here 3 or 4 years ago. But he wasn't shot because it's a bad neighborhood, he was shot because the security guy was some right-wing gun freak on an authority high. There are some homeless people around, but not too many. In response to an earlier poster, you'll see them a lot more during the day. Surprisingly enough.

Construction: The stuff they give you is pretty decent. There is no central cooling and if you get cold easily, you do have to wait a few days for the central heat to get cut on. There is a problem during the summer with the air conditioners. There are three air conditioners in a two-room apartment: one in each bedroom and one in the living room. If you have all three cut on, you will most likely flip the breaker. This can be a problem. Buy a box fan for the living room. Trust me, you'll need it.

Maintenance: The maintenance guy is pretty cool. My stove blew up on a Saturday about a month ago and he was there at 9 A.M. on Monday. We had a new stove Tuesday. So I don't have anything bad to say about the maintenance people. It wasn't his fault that the water was left on.

Staff: This is pretty bad. The old secretary was surly and dumb. She was extensively profiled in a previous review. But she's gone now. We have a new secretary and she seems relatively competent. The building manager can get an attitude and she was mighty evasive (and gone) during the water ordeal. But she's generally not too bad.

Overall: I can't recommend this to fellow college students. It's and old building and I don't think their expectations will be met. I would recommend a one-room apartment to a young couple or an older person. There's nothing really awful about the building. The water thing was bad, but it's been a decent, relatively cheap place to live. And you can't beat the location. If you don't have a car, this is a great place to be.

you know you're paying to live in this place right?

it's like paying for an entire pizza and only getting a couple slices... and in this case, those 2 slices have been stripped of cheese. honestly, if you're anything less than absolutely furious, it must mean you have a ton of money to just throw away, or that your parents pay your rent. grow up folks and give them so much hell that they ---- flames.
