Still undecided but not a great start

I have lived at Quail Run for almost a month now. Single parent family with two small children. We were helped immensely prior to moving in, even completed the lease for the most part through the mail and over the phone prior to moving in state. The model apartment shown to me was large and very nice. However....the day I moved in was a different story. I immediately had to scrub everything down- kitchen and bathrooms especially prior to unpacking. The "cleaning team" did not do a whole lot of cleaning if you ask me. There were several issues that needed to be fixed upon move in such as: the painter painted over absolutely everything to include the towel racks, splattered on the bathroom mirrors, door knobs, closet door handles, inside of all cabinets and doors to the point the paint is cracking and big chunks are falling on the floor along with wood chips, the window was painted shut but was not completely closed when painted over therefore letting in alot of cold winter air, unsecure front door with no weather stripping or functional lock, broken toilet in the master bathroom, loose trash filling both trash containers provided, and a multitude of other areas needing attention. I put in work orders for everything needing repair and slowly one thing at a time has been tended to.
I finally inprocessed Fort Jackson as of this week and the Housing manager on post had a fit when I told her where I am living. She said there have been numerous complaints with the maintenance at this apartment complex and to ensure from this point forth I type all my work orders up, signed and dated to give to the management here as well as provide a copy to the housing office for monitoring. She said if the issue is not resolved in 14 days then we have legal rights.
I took here advice= Thank God! I typed up a very formal document and even had the management here sign for the document upon receipt. The manager was very apologetic and acted shocked that any of these issued were ongoing. He assured me that he would personally come to my apartment with the maintenance team the following day to correct as much if not all of the problems. As promised, he did arrive today with his work guys to fix as much as possible. I can proudly say that my toilet finally works after almost a month of living here, my bathtub is not leaking anymore, my washer door finally closes, my garbage disposal works, and the trash bins provided are clear and clean.
This gives me hope that things will get better.
As for the pros, I have yet to see any bugs (living anyway). I have found two dead roaches but no crawling of anything. My upstairs neighbors are for the most part very quiet and respectable. I have a ton of space considering it is an apartment. My enclosed patio was replinished with new carpet which I now use as a play room for my boys. The apartment had new carpet installed prior to my moving in. I never have an issue with parking and have not really had any issues with children outside in the area. Granted the area is not the best. I have been told during my short stay here that Percival Road (the main road that parallels the apartment complex) and Decker Blvd (also right down the road) are the highest crime areas. I thankfully have not heard any gun shots to date but do seldom here sirens.
The property does have a tiny but functional gym open 24 hours a day. I use it frequently and rarely is there anyone else there. The bathrooms and overall maintenance of the gym are not good. I have actually taken the trash out in the bathrooms there because it was so overflowing and smelled horribly. There also does not seem to have heat in that building. Motivates you to heat up quickly...
The property is gated in at night but as someone else reviewed earlier, I think the code is out among the community and does not do a whole lot of good.
Overall, I am content for the time being. I can get to work in less than 7 minutes. Wal-Mart and many other shopping and eating areas are within minutes away.
I am only here for six months so my opinion is still just get through it until I can move back into a house with a garage and true security and comfort.
I hope that I have provided a better insight to what Quail Run is like now.
