St. Andrews - Dishonest and Dangerous

Years at this apartment: 2004 - 2006

I lived in the St. Andrews Apartment Homes for almost three years. At first I thought they would be a step up. I was wrong. The problems started from day one. Missing doors on laundry room, pealing linoleum in the bathroom, kitchen counters destroyed, no fire extinguisher, etc. I should've taken those items as warning flags, but thought that management would deal with me equitably. Nothing could be further from the truth. Management of the apartments was ill-tempered, at best, and did not respond to any complaints or requests. At one point the apartment complex began charging a $2.50 fee to accept payment for the rent/utilities...imagine that, being charged to actually fulfill your end of the agreement. When I asked, in writing, about their authority for charging this fee, and the basis of the fee, I received no reply.

Over the course of my time there the property continued to deteriorate, with management unwilling to entertain complaints about the condition of the apartments. By the time I left, it felt like living in a ghetto. The quality of the renters had declined to the point of fights in the parking lot, dumpsters being set on fire, drug dealing, etc. I complained a number of times to management about the small plastic envelopes I continued to find in the parking lots...obviously they contained illicit drugs, most likely crack. The response I received was akin to "What do you want us to do about it'" and no further concern from management. I finally moved my family when my wife's life was threatened by the down stairs resident. Again, a complaint to managment fell on deaf ears, and I was left with no choice but to leave. They wouldn't even let me out of the lease a month early, even given that my wife was threatened, and that we no longer felt safe in the complex.

So, now, two plus years later, and I received a call from a collection agency stating that I owed $400 in damages. I received no correspondence from the apartments on the subject, and now I find out they allege I destroyed the apartment. I paid the collection agency simply because I was left with no other recourse. I could refuse to pay, but the damage to my credit score would continue. I'm livid over it.

My advice, find yourself another place to live...your life, and the health and safety of your family is not worth the risk.
