I was able to rent a single bedroom apartment at The Fairways for $500 a month. That's hard to beat in Columbia for a fairly nice apartment. The apartments are somewhat isolated and hard to find, so I think they have trouble filling up all their units so they are willing to rent them for less than the apartmentfinder books say. The apartments are fairly old but in good condition. They are located by a golf course, the Carolina Research Park, and the Northeast branch of Midlands Tech. They are only about 5 minutes from Columbia Mall, and 10 minutes from the Walmart and retail area on Two Notch. If you work out at Bose or another company near Blythewood, this is one of the closet apartments. IF you are a USC student, you can pick up 277 right up the road and it's a straight shot into downtown Columbia - about a 15 minute commute to USC. I would recommend getting an apartment on the bottom floor because the stairs are somewhat narrow, and it was difficult moving some large items like washer and dryer into my second floor apartment. The apartment doesn't have a closet in the living area or bathroom, which is slightly annoying, but the affordable rent helps me get over it. Also, the only way to access the bathroom is to go through the bedroom, which is not the best layout, but it forces you to clean up your bedroom if guests are coming over. Another thing that worth mentioning is they have the older 3 prong outlet for your dryer, and most modern dryers come with a 4 prong cord. I had to buy a 3 prong cord for 25 dollars or so, and the maintenance guy connected it to the dryer for me. One thing I like about the apartment is it has good overhead lighting in all the rooms, and that doesn't seem to be the case for many apartments these days. The apartment complex seems pretty safe to me - it's in a rural location, and I have never had trouble finding a parking space or had a problem with noisy neighbors. The office staff is very nice, and they are willing to work out unusual lease terms with you. I was able to negotiate getting out of my one year lease without paying the termination fee if I was not accepted by the pharmacy college at USC or I got accepted by MUSC in CHarleston. I would recommend this apartment complex, especially to USC students looking for a nice apartment for an affordable price. aLKeoXpj3s4OSgrp1trb
