Keep Looking

We lived in the townhome section for about four months. Everyone was kind of friendly at first. However, we should have known there'd be issues when the property manager showed up 45 minutes late to our scheduled Saturday appointment (during business hours). Her excuse' Taking her child to a friend's pool and just got carried away talking.
The grounds were taken care of, for the most part. However, they did not enforce cleaning up after pets. That was always a treat when walking.
Our neighbors weren't exactly model neighbors, as they were ticked that we parked in the two spots directly outside of our townhome. She cursed and screamed about how they liked to park each of their cars in two spaces and we needed to adhere to that rule. We continued to park out front.
Overall, none of the neighbors were very friendly. We frequently had knocks on the door in the middle of the night, asking for a spanish translator- despite the numerous amounts of spanish speaking folk. Talked to the neighborhood cop and he figured it was someone searching for drugs.
Our big gripe was when our other neighbor moved out (the only friendly person). Apparently, his clothes washer water valve was not completely shut off. It caused our apartment to flood. It took six hours for maintenace to come to our apartment and inspect because they were painting/updating a vacant home- all of them. Eventually, they sent someone over to suck up the water and start a blower. They said it would take two days for the carpets to dry- with the blower. They came for the blower five days later. We were unable to use the TV area downstairs for the first three days. Oh, I had the pleasure of moving all the equipment with my 1 1/2 year old, while they stood and watched. My husband was working.
Property Management was not the greatest. Office Manager had a chip on her shoulder. She got snippity with me when I stopped in to pick up a package left by the post office. She made a comment about all the packages we had been receiving. I told her it was approaching Christmas, our families lived far away, and she should expect more. It did not help that they all came and went as they pleased. Many times, I had to wait days to pick up our packages because they were never in the office during posted hours and they took 2 1/2 hour lunches.
It took nearly 40 days to refund our deposit and that was only after my husband started calling twice a day, everyday, until we received it. Their excuse' The owner only comes once a month to sign checks. We told them we didn't care because our lease said 30 days and so does SC law. When we received the check, it was dated for six days after our departure.
Oh, don't walk alone after dark- people follow you.
The interior of the townhome was severely dated but I understand that some had been remodeled. Ours had not because it had just been vacated and was the only one available upon our arrival. One bedroom stayed cold while the other room was always toasty. The pipes were incredibly loud and whenever a neighbor took a shower, our pipes practically sang. The interior of the kitchen cabinets were very old and we'd frequently find wood shavings on our dishes. I must say that it was very clean upon our check in.
Overall opinion:
Negative: Lousy neighbors, frequently loud @ night, unfriendly staff, slow response time on maintenance issues, dated interior, area felt unsafe- apparently it gets worse as you move out of the "family" townhome section.
Positive: Low rent, pet friendly, short-term lease & month to month available, fairly clean upon move in, they have neighborhood "parties" around holidays.
My advice, keep looking unless you need low rent.
