Years at this apartment: 2003 - 2007

We lived at Ashton Woods/Desert/Walmart's backyard for several years. Overall there were some really great pluses about living there. It's super close to I-85, the community (the people that live there at least when we were there) are really nice, its very kid friendly, and there is usually enough parking as long as people park their cars in actual parking spots. I have always found the staff to be very friendly and helpful, although i had neighbors who did not feel the same.
On the other hand, even though the apartments DO seem to have more noise resistance between units than other complexes, we could still hear everything that was going on in the unit that was above ours (walking or STOMPING, opening drawers and cabinets). We could smell smoke from the unit below us, and occasionally other questionable smells. The maintenance theory is usually, put a band aid on the problem instead of actually fix the problem.
The rent ALWAYS goes up if you choose to renew your lease. I would say 90% of our building (all several year residents) moved out within a year b/c the rent was getting too high.
And then there's the whole Walmart fiasco! There used to be a barrier of trees between Ashton Woods and chaos of Pelham Rd. Thanks to Walmart this is no longer the case. Living through this construction ALL DAY AND NIGHT was awful! Ashton Woods opted not to be apart of neighboring communities that were fighting against the Walmart arrival, which boggles my mind b/c so many of the staff live there. At any rate it's here which will no doubt bring on a new set of problems.
Ashton woods was a great place for families, but will probably end up being mostly college kids.

I wish you could comment on the Thornblade residents that settled the suit that allowed Walmart to go forward. Have you seen the news in the last few years? That suit is the ONLY thing that stopped it then. The sad thing is being the most expensive store that Walmart has built nationwide, I am sure you too will be shopping there. Convienience. I don't think anyone moved there to be in the rural out skirts of the city.

THE TRUTH ABOUT THE LAWSUIT BY THORNBLADE IS THERE WAS NOTHING THAT THEY COULD DO. THE PERSON THAT OWNED THE PROPERTY FILED A LAWSUIT AGAINST THE PEOPLE IN THORNBLADE THAT WAS TRYING TO STOP WAL-MART. THE PROBLEM WAS THAT THE LAND HAS BEENED ZONED HEAVY COMMERICAL FOR THE PAST 30 YEARS OR MORE. DON'T FOOL YOURSELF THE PEOPLE FROM THORNBLADE WILL SHOP AT WAL-MART THE SAME AS THE REST OF US. THEY JUST DON'T WANT ANYONE TO SEE THEM. IF YOU DO NOT CHOOSE TO SHOP THERE THEN DON'T, BUT DON'T BLAME ALL OF THE PROBLEMS AT ASHTON WOODS ON WAL-MART. I AM A LONG TIME RESIDENT AND WE DID NOT HAVE TROUBLE BEFORE THORNBLADE AND ALL OF THE OTHER SUBDIVISIONS. SORRY BUT I CANNOT AGREE WITH YOU.

I do not plan on shopping at that Walmart. I can't remember the last time I shopped at ANY Walmart. I don't blame all the problems of Ashton Woods on Walmart, but it was a factor while I was living there. (hence all of the other things I wrote about BEFORE I mentioned Walmart.) I was giving my honest opinion about my experiences living at Ashton Woods. I do not and have not lived in Thornblade so I don't know where all 'the people from Thornblade' is coming from. I don't know what the Thornblade residents do or think so it would be a bit presumptuous for me to do so. But since it was brought up, (for what it's worth)I believe there is no use for a Walmart there. There is a Bilo right there on Pelham, a Publix on Batesville, and there is already a Super Walmart on exit down on I-85. I just don't see the logical justification for adding another Walmart in that area except that Walmart bought the land and wanted to put one there. I never heard anyone at Ashton Woods complain that a Walmart or grocery store was too inconvenient to get to.

I have lived here a long time. Everything was fine until the invasion of Walmart. Now it sucks BAD and we are planning our escape. STAY AWAY!
The Walmart traffic alone is a nightmare.
