I'm updating my review to account for my observations over the last nine months. While my general opinion of the facilities remain the same, there is a definite issue with the staff.
Although drugs are strictly prohibited with a "zero-tolerance" policy, when we reported a known drug dealer that lived above her, he was somehow allowed to stay even though he is not listed on the lease (another strictly prohibited issue). We had to report this twice because after the first report, the staff member we talked to hadn't gotten around to reporting the incident. Perhaps it was never reported?
We now have it on good account that drugs are prolific throughout the complex. This is confirmed by residents as well as local police. While the police are doing what they can, it is a situation that has been out of control for some time. Without the help of residents, it becomes very difficult to eradicate. Due to the drug presence, this place is unsafe. Regardless of crime, children will be exposed to bad elements and can be easily drawn in. DO NOT RISK YOUR CHILDREN!!!
Due to these circumstances, I can not recommend this complex in good conscience. Looks can be deceiving and they are in the case of Planters Retreat.

My girlfriend and kids live in Planters Retreat and the only bad thing I have to say is that you occasionally get a bad resident that makes it hard on the rest.
Noise inside the apartments is an issue as they are not sound proof. Some apartments are better than others but these allow a lot of noise to pass to the apartments above and below...especially below. If you will be bothered by hearing that your neighbors are alive (footsteps, cupboards, running water) then these apartments aren't for you. However, MOST apartments aren't for you in that case.
The staff is friendly and when my g/f's kids got into mischief, they were more than understanding and we worked through it easily. This is a rent-subsidized community so you will have some folks with lesser social standards. However, being poor is no excuse for being dirty. I know...I grew up VERY poor but we were always clean.
If there are drug issues, I haven't seen them. However, if you know about it, post it here. I will report it for you to the local law enforcement. A cruiser through that "back area" every now and then will hopefully clean things up. Drugs are expressly prohibited in the lease so if the offenders are caught, they will be GONE!
Everyone do your part and these apartments will be even better than they already are. It takes teamwork and community to make a nice home.

I see these appartments have not changed a bit. I moved in when the appartments were first built. My neighbors below me partied a lot and made loud noises at 2 and 3 oclock in the morning. Everytime they made loud noises my neighbors beside me would pound on my door and start yelling at me to keep the noise down. I was always sleeping until they pounded on my door. This causes too many problems for the good people. As for the drug issue........ people there accused me of selling drugs and I worked 2 jobs just to put food on the table. I'm sorry but I worked so many hours that if I were home it was to sleep only to be woke up by a crazy neighbor. Drugs are a problem everywhere but this place was so bad when I lived there and the office personel did not do anything about it. They claim they do background checks on people but they dont. Many people who moved in while I was there had very bad charges against them. One last thing while i was living there a guy in the E building had a telescope aiming straight at the pool and watched everyone. I was there over a year before he removed it,and I believe if he is still there, he still uses it but hides it much better. perve! And oh ya before i forget the trash has always been an issue at planters retreat

If you are smart or just have common sense; stay away from this place. I currently am looking to move. These idiots will sit in the breezeways; especially at night or after hours selling drugs and smoking their drugs in plain sight. They don't stop while your walking your children in and out of you home. I pay rent and didn't know that they had section 8 housing and this was the ghetto. STAY AWAY or your life will be endanger. I have been threatened twice and waiting for the office to open. I am having attorney draw up some papers and since the apartment manger has been notified via telephone and e-mails she still has done nothing. If you want to protect your children and love them; sacifrice and pay higher rent because you life or kids will pay the price.
