Horrible staff, poor maintenance, loud, and rundown.

I moved into the Chalet Apartments about 6 months ago. When I viewed the complex before signing the lease, it seemed quiet, well-kept, and decently priced. However, the next day when I began moving in I experienced my first typical night here. Crowds of people constantly 'hang-out' in the parking lot drinking, partying, being loud, and blasting music from their cars. Beer cans and bottles constantly are strewn about the walk-ways and parking lots. It seems that everyone here has a stereo system, and they make good use of it. This is certainly not a place to live if you want privacy and quiet.
Also, the staff here are an absolute joke. A couple months after I moved in a leak started in the ceiling of my master bedroom. I reported it, and the maintenance man came up to look at it a few days later. He said that he would go up on the roof to look, and that was the last I heard from him. A few more weeks passed, and the leak steadily worsened. I called again, and yet agan the staff came to look at it. They spent about 2 minutes in my apartment and left, and the leak was still present. I called a third time and was finally told that most of the roof's in the complex needed to be replaced, there were multiple leaks, and that I needed to be patient. I waited for about another month. By this time there was a hole in my ceiling about a foot in diameter, plaster and paint where falling from my ceiling in chunks, and black mold was growing along the ceiling.
After waiting for well over three months I finally had enough. I printed off a copy of the Chattanooga Building Code, highlighted all the areas where it indicated that what they were doing was illegal, and took several pictures of the damage in my apartment. I sent this all to the manager with a letter stating that my roommate and I were no longer willing to tolerate it. Only after that did they hire a roofer to repair the roof and fix the leak.
However, the matter of my apartment ceiling remained. The entire ceiling in the room was warped and buckled, mold was growing, and there was the matter of the large hole. They sent someone up to repair all of this, but all they did was cut out a small area directly around the hole and patch it. They never replaced the damaged sheetrock, they never did anything about the mold, or the fact that the entire ceiling is warped. I have done some construction work in the past, and if it was a job I was doing, I would have ripped out at least two sections of sheetrock and replaced them. All they did was take about 2 hours to slap something over the hole. Also, they didn't even bother to paint anything. I have water stains all along the ceiling, and they didn't even bother to paint over the the plaster they used to patch the hole.
Another thing the landlady told me when I threatened them with the building code was that she 'was terribly sorry' we had put up with the leaks for so long and that 'she would compensate us with a nice discount' for rent that month. I was an idiot and didn't get her to state an exact price. When rent was due for the month, I called her to ask how much we owed. Get this- her 'compensation' was an attempt to take $50 off our rent for just that one month. When I said something about that not being much for all our problems, she raised the 'discount' to $75. That was the last straw.
I still have another 6 months on my lease, but I have given my notice that I am moving out. I have also been told by other tenants that several other apartments have been flooded and damaged in this complex. Steer clear of this place. I would strongly advise anyone thinking of moving here to look elsewhere.
NEW- A few weeks after I made this post, my neighboor had his car stolen! It was parked right next to my car in the parkinglot. My roommate arrived home from work at 7:00, saw the car there, and came inside the apartment. My neighboor came out at 7:30 to go to work, and his car had been taken. Someone stole the car while we were just around the corner! The cops found it a few days later... the locks and trunk had been drilled out with drill bits, windows broken, stuff ripped out, etc. Completely trashed and stripped clean. That's how safe this place is... DO NOT LIVE HERE!
