When I was looking for a place to live I had heard and read several bad reviews of the place. However, I had some friends who lived there a few years before and they loved Oakwell Farms.
I wasn't having much luck finding a place, so I went to one of the local apartment referral services and hit it off with the manager. Well, when Oakwell Farms came up, word was there had been some problems and the place has a new manager, etc. So, I went and talked to them. Genuinely good folks who really want to make Oakwell Farms a nice place to live. Okay, honesty goes a LONG way with me, people who will tell you things were screwed up but are getting better means more to me than "this is a great place and we've never had any problems", which everyone knows is BS anywhere you go.
Bottom line, I don't know what it was like before I moved in during the spring of 2004, but I have good neighbors who actually wave and say hello (So does the staff). My neighbors are generally quiet and I've never had any, or heard of any neighbor squabbles since I've been here. When we had a few cars broken into (it's gonna happen anywhere folks) the management made every possible effort IMMEDIATELY to not only tell everyone, but prevent it from happening again. The complex is well lighted and I've never not felt safe at any hour. The very few times I've called maintenance my problem was fixed the next day and they always leave a work order telling you who did the work, when they were there, for how long and what they did.
For my money you can get nice landscaping, a pool, etc. at most apartment complexes these days. Management and maintenance people who actually care make all the difference in the world. Nice neighbors are just the icing on the cake. I highly recommend the place and I'll probably stay here until I buy a house in the next couple of years.
