Legit 1 bedroom review
From: Hermitage-cretonDate posted: 12/28/2006
Years at this apartment: 2004 - 2006
If you are interested in living in a one bedroom, here is a legit review. I lived in the "garden style," the kind that is all on one floor.
Positives: Like most older apartments, the floorplan is large. For the area, the rent is cheap. I only paid 539 a month, 99 deposit and got 2 months free at move in. When my lease was up after the first year, they only asked for an additional 5 dollars a month (as a "trash disposal fee"). Most other places will try to grab and extra 25 to 45 dollars, before arguing, at the end of the lease term. I also got most of my deposit back (82 out of 99). I did spend alot of time cleaning, though. Maintenance was good: In my 2 years there, my furnace and hot water heater broke (the water heater leaked). Both were replaced immediately and correctly. Also, the appliances were brand new. The one bedrooms were also in all the same area and not mixed in with 2 and three bedrooms. Because of that, there was minimal noise from kids running around.
The negatives:
Like I said, the place was old. The cabinets, counter tops, and bathrooms have been there for decades. There was not much partying in my building, but there was one across from me that was somewhat noisy. Forget about the gym and pool, they suck. The laundry room was vandalized several times. My biggest beef is with the quality of residents. While I was there, I saw the cops at least 6 times. Once to break up a fight in the streets, once to serve a warrant, once looking for the guy next door, a couple of times looking into hit and runs, and once because my neighbor's car got stolen. I also used to see people sitting on the steps waiting for people who lived there to come home. They looked a little shady. Parking is tight. If you come in after dark, you will be probably be parking a few buildings down or next to the mail boxes. You will also benefit from knowing and understanding your lease. They tried to accuse me of not giving a 60 days' notice of vacate. My lease only asked for 30 days'. Ask for copies when you fill out your notice form at the office!
Otherwise, if you mind you own business, don't talk to anyone, and don't have anything too flashy that people may want to gank, you will be OK. It is a good place to save up some money if you are trying to get in a home. If you are looking to settle, this isn't the place.
