The studio is SMALL but the price isn't that bad when you factor in the ease of getting to class every day! (No traffic, yay!) Great also to get to Boomsday and events at World's Fair Park or a little further, downtown.
The walls were thin - hard to put nails in hanging up photos. The heat/ac unit was lousy. The giant window is great until winter comes. I actually had ice form on the inside of the windows. Solved the heat loss with blackout curtains. Noise from neighbors was not that bad. Great neighbors too!
I thought the staff was great. When i called in work orders, usually 1-2 maintenance guys would descend on the place and busily work like bees. Some problems did take multiple trips.
Parking lots are assigned which is good because parking on the street became impossible over the years. (Beware football games though, while you will have parking... you need to plan around the crowds coming and going).
Safety, while a concern, was luckily never a problem. I have a large dog and would walk her at whatever time she needed it. Although the Fort can be sketchy, it helped that she was big and that so many people were out and about. Only problem over the years was minor vandalism to my car(football saturday). As for pet policy, i'm not sure if there are any breed restrictions but as for size she's about 60 lbs, so large is okay.
Bugs used to be an extreme problem, but about two years ago they switched exterminators and that did the trick for my apartment.
So overall I would recommend the complex. I really liked being so close to campus. The price was great considering i had a large dog. (There is an off-leash dog park off of western ave that is a short drive away.) If you don't mind the space considerations (at least for the studio) and the need for an elevated alertness to your surroundings, this was a really good apartment for the cheap, large pet-owning student.
****This is for the building 11/16 area. The complex is spread out over different blocks, and is not concentrated. A different set of buildings might have a completely different feel safety and grounds-wise. (The grounds by these buildings were well kept with shrubs, annuals and trees while others didn't appear to have anything.)

How does highland compared to other places? What were your living conditions before moving to highland apartments? You don't address these concerns. Was the complex well-constructed? How often were you at your apartment (e.g. only in the early morning and evenings, or throughout the day)?
