BEWARE OF MANAGEMENT

Years at this apartment: 2003 - 2004
I am writing this in the hopes that someone will be spared my nightmare. I was harassed for several months by the Estates at River Pointe apartment complex in Memphis, TN. I moved into that apartment in December, 2003. In March of 2004 I unexpectedly lost my job due to funding issues. I was unable to collect any type of unemployment benefits because I had previously been a graduate student for some 4 years in another state. I have a doctorate in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, and Biochemistry so finding suitable work in my profession would require my moving outside the area. I promptly gave the apartment complex a 60 day written notice and agreed to pay an early termination fee, a payback of concession, and relinquishment of my pet and security deposit. I spoke with management personally about this issue and agreed to make 4 payments over 4 months following my move. However, they kept harassing me for more money and refused to tell me why. I attempted to contact management by phone and letter on numerous occasions, but with no resolve. I feel they have acted very unethically and unprofessionally. If someone asked you to give them more money and refused to tell you why, would you do it' I started receiving threatening letters. Management claimed pet damages to the carpet, but with no other damages or standard cleanliness charges. I find this odd in that my cats were limited to certain rooms of the apartment and were certainly not allowed in the closets. I simply wanted them to explain the supposed damages to me and answer my questions. I asked them to send pictures and reports of the alleged damages to the apartment. I also requested certification of new carpeting and why patching was not and could not be done. I also requested verification of the old carpeting as to the date it was installed (as it was not new when I moved in). From this I only received further harassing letters from management and their attorney asking for money and never responding to my questions. I am a professional, organized, and very clean woman. I have photos of the apartment to reflect that. Money is not the only issue. What about principle' In all, I paid them $4,423.62 following my leave. This is outrageous! I feel potential consumers of The Estates at River Pointe be aware of their unprofessional managing ethics.
