I am a young professional who moved to Memphis about a year ago. Having lived in a few sprawling and generic apartment complexes in college, I was looking for a unique place to live that was walking distance from all the basics: grocery store, bank, pharmacy, park, restaurants, and bars. And, being in my first job since graduating, I was looking for something affordable. The Gilmore could not fit the bill more perfectly.

Rent/Utilities:
I live in a large one-bedroom apartment and pay about $695/month rent. Utilities are shared by the residents in the building, so you pay proportionately according to the size of your unit. On average, utilities have been about $100/month for the large one-bedroom. You're on your own for cable/internet/landline.

The Perks:
The building and apartments themselves are fab: solid construction of an Art Deco era, lovely terrazo floors, sturdy wood doors stained dark brown and with cut glass doorknobs, high ceilings that make the units feel bigger than they are, closets with built-in shelves, tiled bathroom, great looking radiator covers that double as shelves, ceiling fans, and windows galore. I live on the 7th floor, so I get lots of light and great views. There's a laundry room on-site, and I rarely have to wait for a washer/dryer. I'm up on the roof-top deck several times a week, either catching some rays or having a beer with friends. The apartments are sprayed once a month for bugs and I have yet to see one of the ubiquitous Memphis roaches since moving in. The residents are friendly and quiet, and I've enjoyed getting to know some of the eccentric characters who live here! I have never felt unsafe in the neighborhood, even as a female and at night. The office staff and maintenance guys are the best I've ever met.

The Drawbacks:
Even a place as great as this has it's shortcomings. Some may be turned off by the lack of central a/c, however this is pretty much standard for the older Midtown buildings. For the one-bedrooms, there is only one air-conditioning unit and it's in the living room, so the separate bedroom can get quite warm during the summer. I've solved this problem by placing a fan in the doorway of the bedroom and blowing the cool air from the living room into the bedroom. Some have complained about limited parking, however I have never once been unable to find a spot. The parking lot itself is well-lit. There have been a couple of cars broken into since I've lived here. Be smart and don't leave tempting items in view and you will likely be fine. The thing that drives me most nuts is that they paint over the porcelain in the bathroom...and the paint ends up flaking off after about a month. I don't get this at all and the results are not very pretty. Also, no pool. That kinda sucks.

Overall, I feel lucky to have found this place. I plan on staying for as long as I continue to live in Memphis!

***UPDATE*** As soon as management heard about the whole paint situation, they immediately had the bathroom repainted. I told you this place is great! bYr9ljUwtCbMRXE8dRDC
