I have lived at Island Park Apartments for two years now and I have to say that, even though the rent is outrageous, I have not been able to find another place as good as this, especially considering the location. I rent the smaller sized one-bed/one-bath apartment, and still everyone comments on how huge it is. It is the perfect size for a person who lives alone. The move-in process was very easy. The apartment was generally very clean, and the few small problems I found were quickly resolved. The maintenance staff has been wonderful. I actually had one of them change a lightbulb for me one day (because I did not have a ladder tall enough to reach) and he left the whole box of bulbs with me! Not that it cost them much to do that, but it was very courteous.
I did see a few roaches when I first moved in, but since then they have been spraying the apartments more regularly and I have had no problems. I rarely see spiders or any insects. My energy bill is also very low each month considering the square footage of the apartment and the fact that I don't pay much attention to "saving energy".
I like that my apartment has a front porch where I can grill out and sit outside. I would like to have a pet but I am just not able to pay their $300 pet fee plus $20 per month :(. The building I live in seems pretty quiet to me; occasionally I hear footsteps or people talking but not loud music or anything. Parking just depends on what time you get home in the evening. I am usually here by 5:00 and park directly in front of my apartment; if you get here any later than 7:00 you'll have to park in the visitor spots and walk a bit (makes me nervous to walk alone in the dark).
The community has a small but well-kept pool area and also a small gym. I rarely use either one so I can't really comment on the quality, but it's nice that they are offered. I do utilize the "free movie checkout" quite a bit. They are actually pretty good about keeping new movies coming in.
Mud Island is definitely one of the best locations in Memphis. I love being able to go outside and walk along the river (or even just enjoy the river as I drive by on my way to school!). There is also a convenient grocery store here on the island, which is overpriced but really comes in handy when I'm cooking something and realize I need so-and-so ingredient that I don't have.
All in all, I have to say that I've really enjoyed living at Island Park and I will be sad when the day comes that I have to leave. Every apartment has its ups and downs but here it has definitely been mostly "ups"! I am actually visiting this site to check out other apartments on the Island to see if they are any cheaper, but after reading the other reviews I can tell that I should probably just stay where I am! :-)
