It seems to have gone downhill.

I lived in Watergrove for 2 years (in 2002-2004) as a single mother with a small child. We had a beautiful townhome right by the lake. The staff was pleasant and friendly then and the grounds were well-kept. I knew my neighbors and everything was quiet.

After I signed on for another year, things started changing. Drug dealers moved in to the complex and would have loud drug parties all night long. Gunshots were heard. A man started stalking me and peeping through my windows- I had to call the (very helpful) Memphis police twice. The gates were broken more and more, and I started to become fearful.

One morning I woke up to discover that someone (probably the stalker) had tried to UNSCREW MY FRONT DOORKNOB and broke the lock. Thankfully, maintenance had it fixed within 20 minutes. However I should mention that all of my screens, which were blown off in a windstorm, were never fixed. I am lucky that I never had any problems with light fixtures or appliances the entire time I lived there.

The lake view was absolutely breathtaking- it is one of the most beautiful places to live in Memphis. It is conveniently located and the rent is very affordable.

However, if you want to live here I suggest to do the following:
* Keep phone numbers of the police handy and consider getting a firearm or other weapon.
* Be on good terms with the management staff. Visit them in person and be polite. A little smile goes a long way.
* Understand that this neighborhood (the Hickory Hill area) is no longer a "good" part of town. The neighborhood has gotten increasingly worse since 2000.
* Be mindful of your surroundings. If you see a drug dealer, report them to the police. Don't throw stuff in the lake. Keep all valuables locked up tight (perhaps a safe deposit box elsewhere) and stay indoors after dark.

Watergrove is not one of the worst places in Memphis to live. However, you do get what you pay for in this case. When you only pay $400 in rent, you have to realize that there's a reason why it is so inexpensive. Just take care of yourself well and be mindful of what's happening here.
