Poor Maintenance, High Heating Cost - BEWARE

When I first moved in in July 2006, I made notations about things that needed to be fixed, and I was assured they would be fixed quickly. These included some major concerns like frayed wiring in one of the light fixtures, and also some minor things like a cracked pane of glass in a window.

The next week, the sink started leaking and one of the handles broke off my bathtub.

The leasing agent told me i could just use pliers to turn the bathtub on and off, and that my concern was not an "emergency." I got the run-around for weeks. They kept telling me they'd come fix it. One day I think the maintenance man just came out and looked at it and said he didn't have what he needed to fix it, so he actually gave me pliers so i could temporarily turn the water on and off. The first "fix" attempt lasted one day. The faucet broke again and I finally made some suggestions and the maintenance man took those suggestions and fixed my faucet.

It is now mid-March. The pane of glass is still broken. No one has attempted to come fix it, even after I mentioned it several times. The maintenance here blows.

Additionally, the RUBS bill is this secret bill that the leasing agent neglects to mention to you. The buildings are on radiator heat, and the apartments are not separately metered. What this means is that you get a bill based on the square footage of your apartment. You pay for heat EVEN IF YOU NEVER TURN THE HEAT ON.

As illogical as this already seems, it is worsened by the fact that many of the radiators in the buildings do not work properly, and therefore residents CANNOT turn them completely off. I've had to resort to opening the windows several times, even when it's 20 degrees outside!!!

Obviously, this means a lot of heat is wasted, and a lot of MONEY. Residents foot the cost of that bill, so the apartment management has thus far had no motivation to fix the radiators. I believe my heating bill alone was upwards of $165 last month. I live by myself and am rarely home. That is ridiculous.

Although I love some of the features of the apartment, such as the hardwood floors and big windows, the atrocious maintenance and the high cost of heat that I don't even use have made me begin my search elsewhere for apartments. Happy hunting.
