Overview of Oakshire Apartments and Townhomes

Years at this apartment: 1996 - 2007
I am a single mother of one child and I have lived in the Oakshire Apartments since 1996. I am currently paying on a monthly basis because as soon as I find another place to live, I will leave instead of being bounded to a one year lease. Overall, the apartments have gone down hill for the last several years in the maintenance area due to cutback on maintainance staff. Before when a call was made to get something repaired, it was done that day very quickly. Now, it may take longer or the work won't get done at all.
Security is a problem as well. There's a boarded up guard shack which is a waste of space to have if it's not being used. Crime is on the rise and we as paying residents want to be safe. The area I live in have small children and it concerns me that there are children riding their bikes in the driveway or running around in the street. I also had my car broken into three years ago because I decided to park my car on the other side of my apartment.
As far as the rent prices go, it's affordable compared to others in the Memphis area; however, because we're in a predominantly black community of Whitehaven, we should not be subjected as being a lower class group of people who do not care about their property. There are people who have good jobs living in these apartments.
