You'd be better off living in a war zone

From the moment I moved into my apartment, I have been disappointed with the management and maintenance. They have no concept of resident service. They lack professionalism and are overall neglectful in their upkeep of the building. Unfortunately, I never expected that such negligence would lead to a child dying. A couple of weeks ago, a 3-year-old died because he leaned against the hallway door to the elevator , WHICH WAS NOT ATTACHED CORRECTLY, and he fell 9 floors to his death. Appalling as it is, the management had no public response to the residents of the building concerning what was being done to ensure everyone's safety. If I had not watched the news, I never would have known that it even happened. Similarly, this past fall, an individual committed suicide by jumping off his balcony. Not that the management could have prevented such a tragedy, but there was no public notification that such a thing had occurred or any indication in how the management was available to assist residents. Other major flaws are that the 18-story building has a "crack" (managment's term) in it, which leads to several apartments having water damage when it's windy and rainy. After a storm in fall 2005, my ceiling was leaking brown ooze and there was carpet damage. It took 3 weeks and daily persistence on my part to ensure that the damage was corrected, and even then, it was a haphazard job. They do not have in-house security as they advertised when I signed my lease, which is a concern given that the building neighbors several shady establishments. The covered areas of the parking garage are mostly unusable as the majority of spaces have melted paint that drops from the ceiling onto cars. The carpeting and walls in the hallways on many floors are incredibly dirty, and the stairwells are full of cigarrette butts and other unrecognizable, rotting objects. Recently the management thought it a good idea to lock the trash room, so if a resident has an item that is too large/heavy to fit down their floor's trash shoot (anything larger or heavier than a typical kitchen trash bag), they must call the management to get a number to call someone else to let them into the trash room. Obviously, the management is not at all resident-oriented. Also, there is only one maintenance person for a building of 120 apartments. The owners apparently live in Chicago, and either there is very little direction to the management or there is very little follow-through. Save your money, save your life---stay away from The Pinnacle of all things horrifying.
