The Tower is a good place to begin your Memphis apartment experience, and now with pros and cons:
Cons: The building was built in 1959 and still uses the original duct system, so although heating/cooling are not always a problem, I could smell smoke and fumes from apartments below mine. Also, although tenants can control the temperature in their rooms, the management decides when to switch from heat to air and vice versa. Road-noise is a problem occasionally mostly because my apartment faces Central Avenue.
Pros: The management (Joey) is great and is the best asset to University Tower. He was always very helpful, whether I had concerns about air conditioning, package delivery, or just general small talk. Any maintenance issues I had were promptly taken care of (even after-hours), although I may not have been told they had. The parking lot is gated, well-lit, and monitored at night 5 or 6 days a week by a hired security guard. I heard of/experienced NO car break-ins over my year here, indeed a rarity for Memphis.
Overall, a good first apartment, but it was time to move on.
