Notes from the warden

I moved into Biltmore Place because it was so much cheaper than my last apartment. It's pretty spacious, but has some serious issues. First, in the corner apartments at the towers, there is no insulation where the tower is. The temperature in this room during the winter is a good 10-20 degrees below the rest of the place. I've caught a cold twice this winter because of this nonsense. Secondly, management and our individual apartment have a running game, where we ask them to fix what could laughingly be called the dishwasher - they show up, "fix it" and leave. Trouble is, the damn thing still doesn't clean any dishes. I have to wash them by hand and basically use the washer for rinsing. Of course, we call again, they show up and nothing is ever really accomplished, but it makes for a good show. Third, these insane notes left on your front door by management. Judging by the tone of them - i.e. if you double park, we will tow you and begin processing your eviction - I can't imagine the manager on duty has ever held a position of authority or written any official notice of more importance than a shopping list. She has no tact and I honestly feel she believes the tenants are a collection of criminals and deadbeats. On this note, we have this monthly inspection process that is wholly invasive and humiliating. Basically, a pair of goons come in the apartment and just start looking around for any signs of contraband. Last time they tried to go into my bedroom but my roommate told them I was sleeping. They seemed rather disappointed by this. This kind of intrusion takes me back to college and at least back then, they were polite when they busted into your dorm early in the morning. Speaking of criminals, we got a note recently about a spate of car thefts in the area. Apparently, people leaving their cars unattended while warming them up during the winter have come outside to discover their cars stolen. Rather than have the security force I see patrolling at night stake out the parking lots in the morning or have the inspectors actually do something useful, we're told to stop warming our cars up. Maybe this is petty, but it seems they don't trust the tenants, but won't do anything to stop real theft. Fourth, if you want to do laundry, be prepared to march through a swamp on your way to the machines. It's like the Amazon when it rains. Also make sure you close the door to the laundry building. There's a note there saying those who leave the door open will face - you guessed it - eviction. Because everyone knows there's an epidemic of people breaking into laundry facilities to do their laundry. I hear these people don't even separate whites from colors. What's sad is the people that officially manage the building - Ghertner & Co. - are a very decent family. They just employ overzealous prison wardens to run their complexes.
