I'm tired of dealing with it!

There has been an up and down of life at Brandywine.
* The apt we rented was horribly painted with paint overspray over every single surface. The company didn't tape over lightswitches or fixtures or even adequately tape off cabinets and windows.
* The first rains we had brought massive leaks into the stairwell. I really had to complain constantly to gte it fixed. Even now, the area around the original leak still gets damp when it rains.
*The bug problem comes and goes...I have only killed a couple of roaches in the house (but they were HUUUGE), but we have had to divest ourselves of tons of crickets and very large spiders and the occasional millipede looking thing.
We had a small mouse problem but I put out some traps, got rid of them, plugged the holes in the stairs with styrofoam packing peanuts and they have not returned in over a year.
*currently, my closet has begun to get moldy. The downspout comes out at that corner of the building and the moisture is leeching through the walls. I sprayed it with bleach, treated all my affected items, put in a little de-humidifier and that seems to have stopped the problem.
* The sewer occaionally backs up into all the lower level apts in my building. This has happened 3 or 4 times. They got the carpet guys in to clean and disinfect the rugs (water had leeched out into the hallway and saturated the carpet, pad, and substraite), but the linoleum is warping and curling from the moisture and the mold and mildew beginning to grow from underneath. I need to get maintenance in to look at it...again. Our bathroon and kitchen linoleum is scratched and dinged and always looks dirty.
* In Jan. 29=005 there was an armed robbery.
* In March 2005 there were more break-in reports (although we didn't hear about it until later)
* In July 2005 our apt was broken into IN BROAD DAYLIGHT, but because we hadn't thrown every single lock on the door, they claimed it was our fault, even though the theives broke the latches completely off the sliding glass door. Ours was NOT the only place hit. I lost my laptop and ALL my DVDs and some jewelry.
When we went to speak to management about it, especially about our suspicions of it being people (most likely teenagers juding from what was taken) in the complex, we were told that "School is fixin' to start again and the kids won't be around to get into trouble."
The police didn't like that answer either, but they didn't have enough evidence to push the issue with management and the good folks at Brandywine were not really forthcoming.
They have a guard at night, but most of the disturbances occur during the day, but they refuse to pay someone to watch the place, or even drive by now and again. The Metro PD does conduct roll-throughs now and again. Which makes me feel more secure...but also depressed that I live somewhere that is unsafe enough to NEED a roll-through.
Now, there are some good points, the location is great. The maintenance guys (when you can get them to come, it often takes at least 3 calls to the office before THEY get the work request) are very sweet and polite and knowledgable. Parking is usually not an issue. The grounds are gorgeous and there are some places in the complex where it seems like a whole other place.
BUT I have been a worried wreck every time I leave the house. If I am leaving for more than overnight and the place will be emplty, I take all my irreplacable items (especially jewelry- I lost some of my favorite pieces and most of them were one of a kind).
Now, why haven't I moved' Truth be told, it is so expensive to get into a new place. Having the $500 up front for security and pet deposits is more than my budget can handle. I went to grad school in NYC, my loans are huge and it takes almost all my budget to keep up with them.
But the kicker is that this lease year they are raising the rent by $20 AND making the residents pay thier own water and garbage collection. So, the profit margin just shoots through the roof for Milestone Management. And I can tell you that won't get passed down to us residents, especially not on the ground floor.
The office staff has changed over afew times and I do not like the folks in there now. I DREAD going over there. One fellow used to be a jerk to me, but we starting running into one another while walking our dogs and now he is a real doll to me. The others in the office...not so much. Occasionally they are flat-out rude and I ALWAYS feel I am making a HUGE IMPOSITION by going in and asking for a package or enquiring about a problem.
