Years at this apartment: 2009 - 2009

I lived at Brandywine between 2005 and 2007. The first year was fairly good. No major problems to speak of. Then in the last 8 months of my lease my neighbor's water heater sprung a leak in the apartment directly overhead. This caused literally a small waterfall to come cascading down from my living room ceiling. Thank God I was home at the time and was able to move my computer desk from getting ruined! The ceiling sagged and had a huge yellow spot in it until I moved no matter how many times I asked for maintenance to repair it. There also was a large bulging crack down the living room wall in the same area most likely due from the water damage. Then the bathroom wall right behind the ceramic tiles in the shower/tub area began to fall apart...the tub was never sealed correctly and was literally rotting away! It took the maintenance staff 3 weeks to getting around to fixing this and the management never offered nor allowed me to stay in another apartment while this was occuring. It was also during this time that I found black mold in the den closet. I always felt that the damage done from my neighbor's water heater leak was never properly addressed and repaired. There was mold not only in that closet but also in the bedroom closet as well. The maintenance staff could not have been more incompetent or rude. They came in and sprayed bleach on everything but didn't bother to tear out the rotting wall itself! Then the day I was moving out I stopped to talk the one of my next door neighbors. She told me they were having problems with mold on their bathroom ceiling as well. I invited her in to my old apartment to see first hand what I'd been dealing with. Then as she was walking back to her apartment one of the maintenance men overheard us talking and I'm not exaggerating... he yelled from his golf cart as he drove by, "there's no mold in there!" We both simply couldn't it. Also, I would sometimes sit outside at the picnic tables that overlooked a small playground. Two different times unaccompanied children wandered up to me and asked me for something to eat. I was so freaked out by this I stopped eating outside!
And in response to the "Don't be so dramatic" post: Yeah water heater leaks and bad neighbors and a whole list of other things are a given sometimes with renting...but it all has to do with how the employees in an establishment go about handling these situations...professionally or not...Brandywine fails on every level...I'm sorry but a few little pretties from Target hung on the wall aren't going to make me forget about how physically ill the mold growing in that apartment made me...

Thank you for your review. I wish more people would find this website. I lived at Brandywine for a few years. It was bad. When I had a maintenance problem, I dreaded having those "ex-cons" come into my apartment, and "try" to fix the problem.

I agree with you about this site...I've since moved to greener pastures and I can't sing the praises of this site enough for helping me find an affordable safe community. And I know that nearly every business no matter how clean and professional they reliably are will get a bad review from someone that just has to have something to complain about...usually those posts are easily spotted and dismissed...but it's good to know that there is a place where intelligent and critical reviews can be posted and heard.
