Not good value for the money

I don't consider myself to be overly picky or intolerant, b/c I've survived living in some really seedy places overseas, but this complex is not worth your money, and that's putting it nicely. I urge anyone considering this place to not rent here. Here is a short list of some of the stuff that we had to deal with:
- Wasp infestations on the porch and wasp nests outside our door in the eaves
- Silver fish all over the apartment
- Chronic problems with mildew in the bathrooms and kitchen
- Outdated appliances and a really shallow kitchen sink, in which the disposal broke down on a regular basis.
- Power outages/surges
- Floor in kitchen sinking, although we're not sure why because no one ever came to look at it
- Window frames pulling away from the building so that it leaves gaps to the outside, letting bugs into the apartment in spring, summer, fall
- Carpet was really cheap and not nailed down well in places. Also there were some areas where you could feel the nails in the floor through the carpet
- Doors to closets/laundry coming off hinges
- Toilets that constantly backed up and very slow drains
- Garages that flooded and destroyed some of our belongings inside, while management said that they "warned us that we shouldn't use the garage for storing anything". They never issued such a warning.
- Concrete stairs with metal edges that are rusting out.
- Front gate consistently broken, allowing anyone access to the complex. In fact, we had a run-in with a psychotic (neo-nazi), who may or may not have been dangerous. Luckily, we were able to get away from him before we could find out which.
The main office employs people who are fairly nice and will respond if called for problems. However, there was an air of unconcern that we felt whenever we did call about something and there were only apologies and explanations for the problems mentioned above when we were leaving and decided to sit down with them and explain the problems we had encountered. Much of the issue seems to stem from the company that owns the property, AIMCO. Their general policy seems to be to give properties a set budget for repairs, etc. Needless to say, either the budget really is way too small, as we were told, or all the money is spent on the outside grounds, which actually are fairly pretty, and not at all on the inside of the apartments. This may also explain why we had the impression of a total lack of initiative in maintaining the apartments. For the money they ask for these apartments, that's not the kind of attitude you expect, and it really is fair to ask for more.
Another side issue we learned about just as we were moving out, was that the management has been promising some of the kids in the complex for a year and a half now that they were going to install a basketball hoop down by the tennis courts. They haven't made good on their promise yet. While this isn't something that necessarily affects general quality of life for the adults in the complex, it does have a bearing on how it might be for the children, and it indicates the overall lack of follow-through, responsiveness and concern coming from the management office. The other concern if you're going to live here with kids is that there are no real spaces for them to play and they often have to resort to playing in the parking lot. That's just something to consider if you're going to be living here with kids for a while.
The only thing that I can say to recommend this apartment complex is that the outside grounds are very pretty and well maintained. The view of trees from our apartment was beautiful. It's just a shame that the management doesn't take the same care with the inside of the apartments.
If you decide to live here, keep it short. That's the best advice I can offer.
