Bad, Bad, Bad

I found Riverfront online and signed the lease via fax from out-of-state before seeing the place in person. Big mistake. When I drove up to the building for the first time, I cried. The inside was not so bad once they replaced my carpet which smelled like urine and had large yellow stains. At first, I thought I was overreacting. But when the movers from the furniture store I bought my couch from came in and right away said: "Whoa it smells like urine in here," I knew things were not good. I do not feel safe outside (a man on the stairs once flashed a blade at a female friend of mine) and my laundry has been stolen. We rarely receive notices when UPS packages are delivered to the main office, so if something?s coming for you, it better not be a surprise, or you won?t get it for weeks or months. But WORST OF ALL, raccoons live in the walls. They broke a hole through my ceiling and come into my air conditioning unit closet which I no longer dare open. They get real loud at night (they?re nocturnal), sometimes scratching at the wall or ceiling for hours. There are some nice things, I guess: the low rent (which attracts the likes of exotic dancers ... one lost her boa constrictor (snake) which was found weeks later in some man?s apartment), and a nice view of the river (which sometimes smells like a sewer at night - guests always comment on that). Oh, and back to the negatives, the train runs by under 25 yards away, parallel to the apartment. They blow the whistle REAL loud, and the apartment shakes. The noise wakes me up at night sometimes. Oh, and despite the internet material on the apartment, I would not consider its location as being "downtown." It is actually just outside downtown behind the fire department and jail. You could not walk (safely at least) the mile or so it would take to get anywhere "downtown." There are some occasional gunshots overheard outside, and I theorize that the sink water is pumped directly from the river to save money, because it?s real murky. I basically feel like this just isn?t the "place for me." I don?t quite fit in with the "average" or ?ideal? Riverfront tenant.
