There is better (and worse) around.

I got in on a pretty good move-in special, so the rent is pretty good for the area. The regular rent is pretty crappy considering you can much newer or updated apartments in the area for the same money. That leads to one of the many small problems. The buildings are old and it shows. The interiors have not changed since being built 30 yrs ago. The apliances are newer, but very very cheap (I have never heard a dishwasher make so much noise). It is a strange mix of mismatched light fixtures, and the insulation is very poor. The flooring insulation seems to be exceptionaly bad, as I can hear the person above me on the toilet, and the 20 pound dog walking around. For some of the buildings the parking is almost non-existant. The pools are often dirty, and seemingly uncared for.
The "Lakes" that are really just small ponds, and really smell. The water features, that I assume are there to help circulate the water, don't really seem to help. The water always seems scummy and stagnant. There are fish though, and the fishing is pretty fun, I don't think I would ever eat anything out of them though.
The geese are enough to drive you crazy. They crap everywhere, seem to make more noise at night, and will not get out of the road (even the ones that have obviously been hit before, just stand there). They also seem to have a habit of attacking people.
The staff is generally attractive and clueless at best. The five months I have been here, some piece of equipment is always broken in the workout room (I have reported these several times, and they seem to get temporary fixes.) If you have a question unrelated to actually moving in, they are pretty clueless. I have limited experience with the maintance staff (always a good thing) but find them generally unpleasant (could just be a personal thing).
The grounds are generally well kept, but there are a lot of dog owners here and few or them feel the need to clean up after them. The place is pretty nicely wooded, so that can lead to some insect issues. I have noticed a fair amount of spiders, but that doesn't bother me. I would rather have spiders than the things I hope they are eating.
I was here for the SWAT raid, but it seems to have been an isolated incodent (could have happened anywhere really). Overall, I have not seen or heard of any safety or security issues while I have been here.
It does seem like the place has a high turnover though, while I love my current neighbors (rare for me, as I didn't even know them at most previous places) most of them plan on leaving at the end of thier leases.
Strangely, after writing this I notice how many small issues there are with this place. It really isn't a bad place to live for the first year because of the move in special. I really couldn't see staying here beyond that.

Final verdict: It is an decent place to sleep and collect your mail until A: you buy a house. B: Move to your next apartment with a great move in special.
