Good, bad, better, going down

Years at this apartment: 2005 - 2007
I moved in a month before Westdale bought the place from UDRT, and that was a really bad time to move in. Air conditioners failing all over the place. This was in 2005. After Katrina hit, quite a few apartments were leased out to victims, and quality of service continued to go down, and crime went up. The people who moved in across from me were great, but quite a few of these people seemed to feel like they owned the place: loud music all the time, coming and going at all hours of the night, and i saw lots of cars with busted windows soon afterwards.
Maintenance was not very good for the first 1.5 years. Part of it I'm sure was due to be overworked. I could never keep my apartment very cool, even after the leak was fixed on my AC. Part of this is due to the combination of a vaulted ceiling and poor insulation. My front door had no weather stripping on it when I moved in. They put some cheap foam stuff on it that started coming off within 2 months.
Maintenance responsiveness improved in 2006, but they couldn't/wouldn't do anything about my air conditioner being unable to cool the place by more than 10 degrees of the outside temperature.
Definitely don't get a 2nd floor apartment here, as the insulation has settled so much in 30 years that it is pretty ineffective.
The gates were broken 3/4 of the time I stayed there, making them essentially more a nuisance than an amenity. They have all been replaced since 2/07, though, and work much better, though still fail occasionally.
If you're looking for a place that has nice landscaping, don't bother. The sprinkers haven't worked very well in several years, and the ants are trying to take over. The trees aren't too bad off, but there's quite a bit of dead grass about.
It isn't as bad there as some places i've heard about, but you can definitely do better for less money.
I think others are feeling the same way, too, as in my area, the only people left are the people that lived below me, with their dog that yapped constantly through the night outside, and the old lady across the way who still has a wreath on her door from christmas.
