not that great a deal

this place isn't so great. i lived here 1 year, and in that time APD came to the apartment complex 3 times that i personally saw. 1, APD knocked on my door and on all the doors in the area around my unit to investigate a disturbance call, although i hadn't heard a thing that morning; 2, i myself had to call 911 when a drunk resident and her drunk boyfriend decided to investigate the contents of my van, thinking their stolen table was inside, and to start kicking at my car as i told them to get lost and drove away (my doors were unlocked but closed at the time since i was loading luggage to head for the airport); 3, saw APD talking to a resident on the way to class one morning but don't know what it was about. so, my point is that stuff happens here. (the place is well lit, though.)

i sent in a written 30-day move-out notice but had to drop by the office to fill out their standard notice. this was a minor annoyance: the information i wrote in my own notice was much more complete than what their form required. the big thing here was that management got confused somehow and mistook my move-out notice as notice that i had already moved out. how they got this idea, i have no idea. i received a call from management asking me about this, and i called back and left a voicemail for them saying that i had not moved out yet and was still living there and to call me if they had any questions. imagine my further annoyance when i found out they put a vacant notice in my mailbox, despite my voicemail, causing me to miss some very important mail and payments.

when i moved in to the apartment, management said there was no application fee. he said it was unthinkable, given the state of austin's economy and employment situtation, that apartments could charge $25 for rental application. little did he mention the $45 mandatory clean-up charge on moving out. i have no idea what is included in that cleaning charge, since i was charged $35 for shower/tub cleaning (although i cleaned the bathroom thoroughly), $65 for resurfacing the kitchen (yes, water will easily ruin cheap materials), and $100 for vacuuming the carpet, and $2 for stove pan cleaning. so, they are keeping my $200 security deposit and asking me for another $47. wow, $100 to vacuum the carpet, considering i called management when i moved in to complain about crusty carpeting. that's right, crusty carpeting. the guy who came over said the carpet in my place was new and the crustiness was because he accidentally shampooed the carpet. he said he got in trouble for shampooing new carpet. i guess i am paying $247 to cover for management's mistakes.

the rails on the stairwell to my building have completely rusted through and are just hanging there in one part. rather than fixing this, management painted the stairwells black to disguise the rust. i guess' i'm not sure what they are trying to do in painting the stairwells black while the rest of the complex is white and aqua.

also, there is a non-resident guy who visits the trash dumpsters now and then. i think he is just looking for junk that he can use, but be careful about throwing out stuff with sensitive information at archway (bank statements, canceled checks, anything with your social security number on it, etc.).

oh, and regarding what the other people said about blackouts, they happened maybe 3-5 times while i lived there. pretty annoying.
suggest you look elsewhere for an apartment. plus, the laundry facility has maybe just 1 or 2 washers that actually have hot water--always been this way apparently.

i have two nice things to say about the management here. one, i forgot to pay rent once and got a reminder on my door instead of demand for payment plus late charges. two, i had to extend my move-out date by a week, and there was no additional charge for that. k6tKKzmJrmATU2ap682S
