A good complex, until we decided to move out

We lived at Barton Hills Park Place for about 9 months. Overall it was a good place to live, and a good value. Eventually we decided to move to a place that was more modern and had a washer and dryer. When we decided to move out, we were unfairly treated. At the beginning of April, I told one of the managers that I was giving my 30-day notice to move out. The manager said that was fine. I never heard from anyone so I thought everything was settled, especially because we were on a month-to-month lease. A few weeks later I checked in with management again, and the manager told me that because I had not given written notice earlier in the month, I had to give written notice immediately and that I was responsible for payment for 30 days from the date of the written notice. Essentially, the management's unclear response to my verbal notice ended up costing us about $400. When I gave my verbal notice early in the month, the manager never said to put it in writing. The manager could have taken two seconds to tell me that written notice was necessary. But he did not, and I can only wonder if it was a type of ploy to try to get more money from us. The experience left a bad taste in my mouth. I would have once recommended the complex very highly, but the final experience showed me that the manager was somewhat obstinate and inflexible.
