I believe that 1007 South is as crime ridden as Austin's insalubrious east side. Less than two weeks after moving in a gang of thieves stole numerous bicycles from 1007--many of them from high balconies. All this took place under the noses of the two "foot patrol" guards employed by the complex.

The number of bicycles stolen, the fact that most of them were nicer bikes (the crummy ones were not stolen), the fact that the thieves knew right where to find the good bikes and the fact that they scaled balconies and hauled away bicycles over what must have taken a considerable amount of time without being spotted by the "foot patrol" all smacks of inside help.

I talked to management who told me that they had not and did not intend to interview the foot patrol employees. Management assures me that this is an isolated incident. Current residents assure me that it is not.

So if you're thinking of living in 1007 South I'd suggest bringing mace, a hand gun, ear plugs, locks for everything, plenty of renters insurance and leaving daddy's expensive BMW at home. And when management assures you that it's a safe place because they have employees patrolling the property on foot all night . . . keep a good sense of humor.
