Move back'' Not in a million years!

Years at this apartment: 2001 - 2002

I sub-leased an apt in this complex from a friend in 2001. When I moved in, the boy who took my lease application said they would run it and handed me a key, telling me I could move in. There was some considerable damage to the rugs and walls, as well as discoloration in the plastic finish of the bathtub, which I made him aware of. He said he would put it in our lease that we were not responsible for that. Little did I know that he was a temp who had no idea what he was doing and never processed our application...but the apts sure did cash our deposit check! Two months later I was called at work by the manager telling me that no one had ever run our app and they found it sitting in a desk drawer. We had to have our application run all over again to see if we could stay in an apartment that we had been paying rent on for 2 months already...rent checks which they also cashed!

There were ants all over our bathroom and roaches always seemed to show up, no matter how much they sprayed. The second pool they had was always nasty and people would put babies in diapers in the main pool (a direct violation of health codes) but no one cared.

When it came time to renew our lease, I signed some renewal forms and the lady at the office said she would get the final lease to me to sign. I asked her if she wanted me to pick it up. She said no. Every time I called, she said she would get it to me. We waited 9 months (with me calling constantly for the first 3 months) and never were given a new lease to sign. I decided to move and gave my notice to vacate to them on May 6th, saying we were leaving on May 30th. They said this wasn't enough time according to the lease...but we had never even signed a lease! So the lady told me if we didn't sign a new one we would be held to the terms of the old one that expired. When I asked why the old lease was valid but the old rent wasn't she became upset and said we had to pay $75 extra to leave on June 6th, making it 30 days notice. I paid just to get out of there, and then a month after moving, they sent me a bill for $350 to cover the damage that was on the apartment before I even moved there...the damage their representative said I wouldn't be responsible for!

Saving money is one thing, but I'll pay the extra money in rent someplace else to save my sanity.
