Dump!

Years at this apartment: 1994 - 2003
I was here at this complex for a very long time because I was what I could afford during the Tech Boom. I drove by there a few months ago because I was in the area...either it's become WORSE or my memory of just how bad it was is a blur.
In the three years prior to finally getting out, there was an average of one major fire per year. One was a four alarm and one was a five alarm in one building within a ten-month period. AND, I understand there was another major fire just a few days ago. Fires at that complex spread at breathtaking speed.
This was my first complex after moving to Austin: finally, I was able to afford something elsewhere, and I was so happy to get out of that complex plus that area of town. When I left, there were all sorts of problems: a leaky ceiling of mine that no one bothered to fix properly, shoddy workmanship, a nasty, disgusting laundry room, and apartments designed to fit a couple of people which were house many. When I left, the corporate office was there because so many long-term residents were leaving. When the corporate officer asked me why I was leaving, I gave her a tour of the complex and showed her why. While I left my apartment in excellent condition, I told her that I didn't appreciate it that the office did not show the same care to such things as the laundry room. When I took her by there, she nearly lost it. I got EVERY PENNY of my deposit back. That was only the tip of the iceberg.
I live near Lake Travis now, and I'll tell you that I'd rather spend extra to live in a nice area than to short-change myself to save a couple hundred dollars. I was attacked at my other old complex; you cannot put a price on class and safety. If you are a UT student, which I was when I first moved to Canyon Oaks, I don't think it's safe any longer to live in that area of town. I can tell you from personal experience that having a gun pointed at you, being robbed and assaulted is no fun, indescribibly stressful and hard to get over, and you risk that by staying at a place like this. I'd go to Far West if you can. East Riverside is quickly deteriorating into a first-class dump, and I'm glad I got out.
