Good and bad, like anwhere, better values are out there

Years at this apartment: 2004 - 2005
I have lived here for a year. I have a large 1 bedroom with a spacious floorplan and generous deck. The carpet was replaced per my request before moving in ( I would not sign a lease until they did so.) Management has responded to my requests, but only after dogged nagging on my part. The first problem was a family above me who let their kids run pell-mell across the floor day and night; it sounded like a herd of buffalo. After two months of determined complaining on my part, they were transferred to a different apartment. Second major issue was a woman who left her dog on her patio with no food or water and the patio door closed; bored, it barked nonstop, and I had to videotape the wretched beast barking and again prod management several times before they made her get rid of the dog, or keep it quiet. You've got to pay for every little thing here: covered parking, $20/month. Storage, $15/month. They pay no utilities and taking trash out is a pain?-getting to the dumpsters is a real trek. Due to poor insulation, utility bills are high. Grand total for a one bedroom as of this writing, May 05: $600 a month, not including utilities. Add utitilies and you can figure more like $800 a month. Hence, I'm moving to a complex on the south side where I will pay $450 a month for a one bedroom with a small electric bill, saving roughly $250 a month. It's not a gated community, but neither is this: the gate remains wide-ass open, and broken. However, I think Chad and his management team are sincerely trying, but the company they work for really hamstrings them and limits what they can do, so in effect their hands are tied. As to management complaints, my only gripe is the slow response; however, I have had pleasant dealings with all of them, and they have been very professional and nice to me. They've never been rude or hostile, however I agree there is a lot of turnover. As to maintenance, I've never had a problem; they were courteous and prompt. They installed my cieling fan without a hitch, and Chad even offered to replace my tile and install a special faucet free of charge for me. I actually really want to stay here, but I just can't afford it. More's the pity! I especially like the pools-sparkling, large, well kept and usually unoccupied. The gas grills need to be replaced tho. My only major complaint (the others are minor) is that the company has an almost Gestapo approach to dealing with its tenants: $75 late fee for rent. You can't put stuff in your windows OR ELSE. It seemed every other day there was a forcefully worded letter about thou shalt do this or shalt not do that or else, like putting items in your STORAGE closet next to the hot water heater (Fire risk, $200 fine if caught). I find such missives and policy oppressive and somewhat threatening; it's unfortunate. It's a large, beautiful complex; with the above caveats I'd recommend it.
