Beer cans and Sasquatch and tetnis oh MY!!!

I feel like a seasoned veteran at this apartment complex and I'm only 3 months into my lease. I would almost bet my view of the green belt (littered with beer cans and garnished with an old broken down air conditioner) that this complex is in bed with the energy company. My roommate and I had a $267.00 electric bill for December. Mind you, we're not talking about a bitter cold December - didn't have to bust out my long-john's the one time. Upon receipt of said energy bill we promptly called management to come check their ancient-ass obsolete appliances to see if that was the problem (Seriously - I hope none of the appliances ever break-down because I'm sure they'd be hard-pressed to find a part for these dinosaurs w/out having to go to a junkyard or an appliance museum). We came home to a note from maintenance stating that: 1) my window was open; 2) the air filter was dirty; and 3) the fireplace flue was open; and that all of these reasons would make air/heat work harder, hence the high electric bill. Now - I fancy myself a reasonable person and would agree with their analysis, except for one small thing - WE DIDN'T USE OUR FREAKIN' AIR OR HEAT FOR THAT MONTH SINCE IT FELT AMAZING OUTSIDE!!!

Moving right along. Oh wait - another thing about the appliances - should you like to say......use your oven, I hope it doesn't matter whether you're baking at 325 degrees or 375 degrees because the knobs on the oven are worthless and it's almost impossible to gauge at what temperature you are actually cooking your food. When we open our oven door or dishwasher door all the way, you can feel the entire appliance coming away from the wall. A little un-nerving if you've ever seen Requiem for a Dream.

Yes - it's true - boys DO pee off balconies here.

The balconies, while nice in size, ARE falling off. The rusty nails, which I presume attach said balcony to the main structure - but I'm no carpenter, are jutting out several inches. I find myself pondering "how long can that nail actually be... You feelin' lucky'"

The walls are membrane-thin and you truly can hear anything going on around and above you. I was convinced that Sasquatch moved in above us, but it turns out that he's a normal-sized guy. I realize that I live in an apartment community and that noise is to be expected, but come on...

This is the only place I've ever lived where you have to make your decision to lease based upon the model apartment. They absolutely WOULD NOT let us see our actual apartment, even after we promised to disregard things that were not ready yet and see the apartment's true potential.

The treadmills in the fitness room (selling point on move-in decision) have been broken for months. Their explanation - we're waiting on a bid for them to be fixed. Come on now. Cheap-asses.

Which leads me to the good points:

1) they truly are a cheap place to live, if you only take rent into consideration

2) choice of accent wall and color is kinda nice

um....

3) maintenance has been responsive to our requests

and uh.... that's about it. Sorry for the diatribe, but the electric bill is a fresh wound and, like I said, I'm only 3 months into my lease.

Foiled again!!!
