Best fork over another 100 bucks a month and find a better place

We moved from a nice complex in another city to Austin. We liked the area around the Aboretum, and eventually decided on this complex. The area is beautiful, and convenient to downtown, great shopping, and fun things to do.

If I were to do it again, I'd keep the location and pass on the apartment. The buildings are old. With old buildings come a host of very annoying things. Number one, PAPER thin walls, floors, ceilings. We can hear everything (and I mean everything) our neighbors do. We know when they take showers, cook lunch, and have a cigarette. There is a fat man who smokes outside the apartment and coughs like he's about to die. I have his schedule down to the minute, and I know every little detail about his personal life because she shouts into his cell phone while he sucks on his cancer sticks.

Another problem with old construction is poor insultation, which leads to high electricity costs (heating and cooling) and drafts at all times of the year. (Oh, and they double charge on you water. A two bedroom for water will run you about $60-70 a month! That's twice what we used to pay for our HOUSE!)

And the kitchen is designed so as to be completely unusable. Have you ever heard of installing the dishwasher at a right angle to the sink, so that if you use the sink, you can't have the dishwasher open, and if you want to load the dishwasher, you can't access the sink' The example is pretty much indicative of the whole place.

They maintain the grounds very well...at least the ones you can see from car on the outside of the fence. In fact, they overseeded rye grass earlier this fall which looks really nice, but STOPPED when they got to the fence. That's what Gables likes to do...spend money on the advertising. It's all show and no substance.

Oh...and don't even get me started on what happens to you if you are one second late with the rent! Waive the billion dollar late fee' NEVER! They stand outside the rent collection bin with a stopwatch, but ever so politely.

All in all - fork over a little more money and try to find a nicer place. You'll thank yourself in the end. k6tKKzmJrmATU2ap682S
