Great Oak is located easily within walking distance of UT campus. The apartment is kept reasonably clean. Fixtures and appliances are very dated. They are replaced only when they break down, but replacement occurs immediately. On site repair is very quick and effective, although their work (a family operation) is clearly not professionally done. Parking is half-covered in most spots, with the remainder open to air. Front office staff is competent and fast, and are in most cases strive to make you happy (a huge plus). Prices are comparable to the surrounding neighborhood.

Now for the reason that you might want to avoid this place. The landlord is heavily judgmental and will treat some tenants better than others. She immediately inquires your job or major during the application process. This is done not as small talk, but to reject any "risky" tenants. If you are looking to rent here I would suggest telling her you are in either the college of engineering or natural sciences.

This is not a huge deal when compared to her clear religious... tendencies. When she found out I was not a Christian I was immediately treated differently. The difference was clear as day and night. She has been known to quote bible verses to anyone who does not fit her ideal of a perfect person, and will hold your ear hostage for several hours. If you can shake this off and put your beliefs aside Great Oak is an OK choice for housing around the UT area. If I had to do it again, I would live at Great Oak, but I would be more careful around the landlord. She is more than fair and reasonable when you are on her good-side, but is unreasonably ruthless if you are on her bad-side.
