Years at this apartment: 1997 - 1999

First of all, it's true what others have
said about cars being broken into. It
happened to me in late 1997. Sad to hear
it's still happening. HOWEVER, I think
this is partly due to an unfortunate
combination of two things: (1) it's in
a marginal part of town (not great, but
definitely not the ghetto either), and
(2) lots of the assigned parking is in
a place where it can't be seen by really
anybody at night (fences, no light, few
if any windows look out on the area) and
there is an easy-to-hop fence that leads
to another area where you can't be seen.

On the other hand, they have heat pumps
(fairly high efficiency I believe), nice
fixtures, built-in cabinetry that's REAL
WOOD (not cheap veneer), a HUGE kitchen
with real tile counter tops (not cheap
formica), built-in bookcases, built-in
washer-dryer, decent-sized fenced
patios, free basic cable, and probably
a few other nice things I can't remember.
The place had been recently remodeled
when I moved in around 1997, and I think
they did a good job.

Management was pretty OK. Only one
screwup that I was ever aware of:
the electric company continued to bill
me for months after I moved out, and
the apartment complex was in theory
supposed to take care of that. But
I'm inclined to believe that was
incompetence on the part of Austin
Energy, not the apartment management.
(Austin Energy, when confronted with
the problem, suggested that I continue
paying them for electric service I
wasn't receiving and then try to collect
the money from the new residents of
my old apartment. Wins my prize for THE
most bone-headed suggestion from a customer
"service" rep. ever.)

So, my recommendation is that if you
should decide to live there, think about
parking your car in the spaces outside
the gate, i.e. by the street. That section
of Steck is pretty high visibility, and I
doubt the thieves will break into cars
parked there. In my opinion, it's
probably just the parking in the back
(the assigned parking) that's a problem.

Oh yeah, one more thing: if you, like me,
must have silence while sleeping, don't
rent one of the units with a bedroom
on the side adjacent to the gas station.
The late night gas station guy used to
power-wash their concrete in the middle
of the night, and the noise drove me
CRAZY, not to mention the bright folks
pulling into the station with really
loud stereos.
