I have been living here through almost half of my year lease and I must say it has been a nightmare due to the very poor or inexistent sound barrier that my ceiling offers me from the neighbors upstairs. I'm not sure if all the downstairs units in this apartment complex suffer from the same problem or if many Austin/Texas apartments (made of wood and sheet-rock) have the same problem, particularly those built in the 70s/80s when construction of apartment units was largely sub-standard (poor quality) construction. But all I know is that my ceiling always makes wood-cracking sounds. Sometimes that sound is very loud and I can hear it throughout my unit as my neighbors are moving about.
Also, I can hear the 3-year old run about and her minimal jumping and playing and falling down is amplified by this very poor floor/ceiling. When I say amplified, I mean the sounds must be much louder for me than for them. I'm still not sure if my neighbors let the child make excessive noise (she can get very restless) or if the roof is simply a joke but my life has been hell and although management has listened to me and been nice and given me options to move to an upstairs in a few months or cancel my lease, that does not solve my problem right now (and my prior discomfort). If you consider moving here, I suggest you avoid a downstairs. But other apartments of similar year-built/materials/geographic area may be the same story. I'm not sure.
