Great for first apartment

Years at this apartment: 2003 - 2005

My husband and I used to stay here for almost 2 years from end of 2003 till the summer of 2005, before we moved out because we bought our own place.

Overall, this is not too bad a place. It is an old apartment complex built in the '80s, so you can't expect much. Otherwise, our apartment unit was clean (except for the fridge and cabinets) when we moved in. We made a complaint to the management about the fridge and was taken care of.

Our apartment is the 1-bedroom study, 1-bath unit. Although I am pretty much contented with the layout and size of the apartment, especially the utility room, I am not happy that the kitchen is way too small, with no pantry, thus storage is a big problem.

The complex grounds are basic, but generally clean, except for dog poop left by irresponsible dog owners. The management could add some more public seating areas, and upgrade the dirty and old barbecue pits. Our immediate neighbors were great, and pretty much kept to themselves, so we didn't have any problems with noise and unruly behavior. Our unit was one that faces Bratton Lane, and the only noise we get is from the fire trucks (there is a fire station just across the street at Shoreline Drive) which use that street while blaring the annoying siren. The gym used to have its A/C running all the time. About the last six months we were there, however, the A/C was turned off after a certain hour in the evening, and that is just unbearable since the gym would stink of old sweat.

The maintenance crew was efficient. From our experience, the maintenance guy would be attending to my complaints the very next day, unless they are super busy, and would drop by the day after that. The only thing I'm not happy about was that the maintenance guy would knock on my door and waited for only a few short seconds before opening my apartment door with the master key. Sometimes I would be in the bathroom, or in the middle of changing, and I think this is totally inappropriate. However, this problem can be easily solved by leaving specific instructions at the management office.

The management crew in the first six to eight months we were there, was awesome. They were always friendly and helpful, and organized a lot of activities for the residents. When the new crew came in, they were not so great, and nothing like the old crew. The new ones were not as helpful, and they did not organize anything worthy for the residents. However, I've never had any problems with missing packages and such horrors, like how residents from other apartment complexes have encountered.

In fact, I thought I should add that I made a phone call to Hunt Club yesterday, because I ordered something online and absent-mindedly had the package sent to my old address at Hunt Club instead of my current residence. The management guy who attended to me, David, seemed very nice and courteous. I called the office again today, and David remembered me when I mentioned my name and nothing else, and I think that was commendable.

This apartment complex is really far from downtown and anything else in Austin that mattered to me, but shopping is really close by at Round Rock, and Tinseltown Cinema at Pfluggerville is really nearby too. And then there is Grand Central Station just across the other side of I-35, if you are into that kind of thing. Just down the street from the apartment complex at the corner of Bratton Lane and Merriltown Drive, is a small strip mall. There are Italian, Mexican, and Chinese restaurants, a pizza joint, and a corner store with a gas station. There is also a coffee shop (called Kenny something) with the best cheese cake I've ever tasted. And right across the street from Hunt Club at Bratton Lane, turn into Loon Lake Drive, and there is a park with jog/cycle trail and a pond. It's a really great family-oriented park.

All in all, we were generally satisfied during our stay there. The best thing about it was our really cheap rent that did not fluctuate throughout our stay there.
