There are so many terrible things being said on this board, and I can't help but wonder why I haven't had nearly as much trouble living here as most. I think it might be because I don't just sit around and complain about bugs and parking and my air conditioner being broken. I am in constant contact with management until the work gets done.
You have to stay on top of them and keep calling, demand to speak to Rachel if you have to (although its usually unnecessary and I've found that Jamela and Leslie are much more helpful, in any case), and make sure you read your lease contract. Know your rights, know what you're responsible for and know what management is responsible for. That contract is not just used to keep you from leaving halfway through your lease; it's also to hold management accountable for their property and responsibilities.
There was nothing but reserved parking in my area when I moved in, but no one owned those spots. I didn't know where I was and wasn't allowed to park. I was more nervous after I saw two cars towed in two weeks. So I went to the office and asked them to do an audit of the parking lot, so that I knew where I could park. It was a long and painstaking process and I complained at least once every week for over a month, but after a while they got tired of me and gave me reserved parking for free for the rest of my lease. Problem solved.
My air conditioner broke, but I had to go out of town so I didn't report it right away. When I finally did, it was on a Saturday and apparently maintenance doesn't work on the weekends, but they were on call. One staff member drove an hour and a half to come and see what the problem was, which I was more than grateful for. I was told he could fix it on Monday. When that didn't happen, I immediately got in touch with the office every hour for three hours, after which they promised to bring a window unit. They did. By the time I got home from work the next day, my apartment was nice and cold. Problem solved.
Those are the biggest problems I've encountered so far. My lease ends in May, and the only reason I won't be renewing is because I'm moving to Dallas. I would recommend you be firm and straightforward with the staff there. You may get some ugly looks, maybe a little attitude, but it didn't bother me and it shouldn't bother you, especially if it means you're getting your problem fixed. Don't be afraid to be a pest. Don't take 'no' for an answer and don't let them intimidate you, some of them will try (Patrick). Remember that YOU are paying THEM for a service, and this may just be THEIR job, but this is also YOUR home. You should expect to live in a home with every modern convenience...in working order.
Beyond that, I think most of the staff are pretty helpful. Some of them are even nice, despite the fact that I am not (not when I have a problem). And I think this is a very suitable place to live, especially for the price. I think its safe, and although there are some problems with other tenants and parking, it's not unlike the nature of any other multi-family abode. Get used to it...or buy a house.
P.S. If you ever have a problem, I recommend you ask for Leslie.

YES! honestly, a lot of the things people complain about are things they can make better on their own. loud at night? buy some earplugs. leaky faucets? buy a wrench. bugs? buy some RAID. people rude to you when you ask them to be quiet? look at your own behavior. if you're polite, they're more likely to cooperate. if you're rude, they'll be rude right back. if things around the unit need fixing, and someone won't come to fix it, stop being lazy and fix it yourself. and of course, be assertive with the staff. insist that you be treated with respect, but don't be a jerk about it.

Right.... it is obviously the tenants fault when things don't get done. You know if it was my own personal place, I would be more than happy to repair anything on my own.... however, it is the responsibility of the apartment to fix those sort of things. Why should we have to pay even more for things that they should take care of! And there are those of us who have been nice all the way through, and things still don't get done. I assure you I haven't been sitting around on my --- thinking things would magically be fixed. I put in work order after work order and still had the same problems. Sometimes, if you're lucky, they actually even showed up to at least "look" at the problem.
