management is sweet, but I almost died.

I've lived in this complex for a year and I'm getting ready to move out. I like the location, the price is decent, and the neighbors are great. I live in a unit that has the _original_ heating/AC unit still installed. The unit is over 30 years old and should have been replaced a decade ago. In addition to being wildly energy inefficient, driving my electric bills over $100 per month for 700 sq feet, the heater never worked for more than two weeks in the winter without breaking down. Every maintenance guy who looked at it said it needed to be replaced, but they kept replacing parts every other week anyway, with a week wait while they ordered the obscure part. There was also one incident where a maintenance man installed a part improperly causing the heater to break again the next day. My boyfriend and I started getting headaches, so I had maintenance test for carbon monoxide. The unit was leaking "a ton" (direct quote from maintenance.) He patched the ducts, but still didn't replace the unit.

The management, which has changed during my stay, has always been very nice and friendly and sympathetic, but has never done anything to demonstrate that they care about the fact that I'm paying through the nose for power and that they endangered my life.

Also, the hot water goes out quite often, causing maintenance to have to shut off water to the entire complex for hours at a time (usually in the morning) while they fix it. This hasn't happened in the last couple of months, so they might have resolved the issue, but I'm not at all sure.

I would not move into this complex unless I verified that the heating/AC unit was new. Buy a carbon momoxide detector, and keep a few gallons of bottled water in your closet. And don't believe the maintenance guy who says there will be no charge for replacing your blinds. Ya know- just skip this one all together.
