If you've gotta live on Riverside you can do a lot worse

I'm happy to report that Landry Place defies many assumptions of life off Riverside Drive. While that road in particular is as culturally barren and dumpy as its reputation suggests, Landry Place offers a bit of comfort to keep the irritation at bay. For one thing, they put a lot of work into the landscaping, which, assuming you aren't woken by the workers, is rather pleasant. The management office is reasonably well run; the staff is very pleasant, at any rate, and maintenance requests are taken seriously and handled quickly. Parking is never an issue, and though I did see smashed windows at least twice -- a friend's car was broken into across the street at Lexington Hills -- I never had a problem with crime myself. LP hires a night watchman, but I'm not sure how effective the rent-a-cop actually is. My problems with Landry Place are, in all honesty, problems that you're likely to encounter in any large complex. Noise is a serious problem, both in and out of the apartments. I lived near the courtyard, which ensured a steady stream of thuds, thumps and grunts from the basketball courts, not to mention the chatter of residents filing past. Then there's the plumbing, which not only vacillates wildly between lukewarm to scalding hot, but also sounds like a jet turbine firing up. Other problems: the laundry centers, despite upgrades from management, are in a poor state owing to a childish lack of responsibility from residents, and at 1.25 per load are a bit expensive. Thin walls ensure that you're going to hear that party downstairs or an argument across the way from time to time. Appliances are all quite old, but mine worked reasonably well, even the rickety-looking A/C. I understand LP has recently added a water bill, but as long as I lived there I only paid electric, which came out to an avg. of 40 per month.

Bottom line: if you have to live off Riverside, or if you're simply looking for a good amount of space for your money, Landry Place is a cut above other properties in the area, including Lexington Hills and, ech, Pinto Creek. But you'd do well to give Craigslist a good, thorough searching.
