summary: i would not recommend this place even to the devil himself. management is an authoritarian dictatorship, sassy, treats you like a child. this place continues to exist for 2 reasons:
1. students who are new to austin and too naive to realize what they are getting for their money. while close to UT campus, that is really the only advantage. There are lots of other places near campus that are about as ugly, but cheaper. Also, do not fear living in far west or some other neighborhood that is farther away, since the shuttle service is pretty remarkable, and your apartment will be a LOT nicer for what you pay. this place is too expensive for the quality of life.
2. people who like to party obnoxiously. If you love a partying atmosphere, no rules, but are not cool enough/too poor/trailer-park-trash to join a frat, then you have found the ideal place at lantana.

I unfortunately lived here for a year. There are three complaints I have:
1. Young, noisy tenants. Most residents are undergraduates, and hence this place resembles a dormitory more than anything else. All the things you would expect of young college students: beer bottles and mess all over the homely grounds. I saw a fellow making a 4' bong out of PVC one day, which while in a way hilarious, reflects on the personalities of the tenants.

There are very few rules here. Parties on weekends till 2 or 3 am. Loud music. should have called cops a number of times. When there weren't parties, it would be a number of people goofing off near the pool. I would typically walk out there in the morning sometimes to find 3 or 4 chairs or lawn furniture in the pool.

The management locked the pool with a chain to prevent people from taking glass near the pool. Could this possibly work'!'! You guessed it. Chain was cut within a day or two, and people went back to partying at the pool.

The walls are the thinnest I've ever encountered in an apartment. Our neighbors were constantly playing music or singing--which was really freaking annoying. There are few things I hate more than Simon& Garfunkel at 9am, when I'm trying to sleep. wtf

2. Management's inability to comprehend its tenants. The management is so detached from what goes on at the complex that they fail to enforce any rules whatsoever with regard to parties.

WHich brings us to the fundamental, salient characteristic of the management: they are desperate for tenants, and will do all they can to take your money. The place is way overpriced for what it is. which leads me to the final point.

3. the place itself sucks. the apartments are so dim and depressing. You don't have access to the circuit breaker in case one should trip. There is no 24 hr maintenance. if you live in the first floor, pill bugs will live in your apt from March through October. the parking is really annoying.
if you live on the west side of the complex (back) you will find that after a heavy rain water will leak into your unit through the wall. Talk about sucking, this happened to us and required ripping out the carpet. This is a basic design flaw of the place.
