My reward for living on the east side

I originally wrote this when I'd only lived here a few months, but coming up on the end of my second year I feel the same way.

The first impression it gives, however, is fantastic. They provide a major employment discount of 5%. The water bill is a *flat fee* $10 per person! The grounds around my building are always nice green grass, clean hedges, clean sidewalks and parking lot. I'm on the edge of the property, which is very spacious with tons of parking. The inner buildings appear to be more cramped with more limited parking, but that's just my opinion from having driven by.

The few times I've encountered office staff they've been very nice and polite. When we were moving and our washer and dryer showed up, there was a problem with the water connections. I called the office, and the maintenance team showed up immediately to help. I've reported a running toilet online, but it hasn't been fixed. Maybe they didn't see the email. I don't doubt their abilities, though.

The kitchen isn't very pretty, but quite functional. I was told they're replacing the old ovens (this place was built in the 80s) as they break down. Mine currently has one burner that goes off and on while cooking, but the others work fine. It heats up quickly for an electric oven. There's a built-in over-the-stove microwave, which saves a ton of counter space. There's a great faucet with excellent water pressure.

The living room space is small compared to other living rooms I've had. I was only able to fit my couch in there; the recliner went into the spare bedroom. There's a fireplace which cuts down on wall space and limits the layout options.

As for fixtures, you can definitely tell they were built in the 80s. They're all functional, however, so it's ultimately just an aesthetic problem. The tubs are not porcelain, but they are larger than standard; I could take a nap in that thing! There are wonderful high ceilings throughout, and a sizable deck. The electric bills are high, unfortunately. My last apartment (750 sq ft) ran $70-$80 in the summer. Here, at 980 sq ft, my past two bills have been $144 and $194. :(

The most important feature for me is the absolute lack of noise from my neighbors. I lived off E. Riverside for two years, and then my previous apartment had an awful noisy neighbor as well. Here, with three inches of concrete between each wall, it's complete silence. I couldn't be happier.

The pet deposit is very cheap: $200 per pet, up to two pets. That's the cheapest deposit I've ever seen in my extensive apartment search. At other places, it would be $400 no matter if you had one pet or two. There is a list of restricted dog breeds, but it was implemented recently; there are still a few of the restricted breeds lingering on the property.

When I came to look at these, I wasn't able to view a home because they were at 100% capacity. I think that looks pretty good for perspective buyers. The floor plan I wanted is great (the largest with the separated kitchen/dining), and there was only one definite opening in the future. I took it sight unseen and have no regrets!
